At the Centre InterpretaciĂł de la Bruixeria, popular beliefs about witchcraft and protective practices meet a multimedia presentation about the persecution of women accused of being witches. Sant Feliu Sasserra also offers historic buildings, local traditions and several walking routes with different focuses.
The history of witchcraft and how it is presented
The first area of the Centre InterpretaciĂł de la Bruixeria explores beliefs and customs relating to popular witchcraft, protective practices against this phenomenon, and associated customs of the time. Based on real events, a multimedia presentation examines the persecution, torture and deaths of women accused of witchcraft. Between 1618 and 1648, 23 women were put on trial in Sant Feliu Sasserra; at least six were executed.
The CÒDEX XVII adventure combines a visit to the Centre with a game and lasts two and a half hours. If you plan to take part, confirm the arrangements before you arrive. The historical and cultural walking route explores the town’s tangible and intangible heritage using QR codes that can be scanned with a mobile device. A video report introduces the history of Sant Feliu Sasserra. At the town hall, the Exposició de la Sotsvegueria adds to this perspective with an audiovisual presentation about the town’s historical significance, particularly the period when it was the capital of the Sotsvegueria.
Walking routes with different focuses
The Itinerari del Serrat de les Forques is a 2,400-metre circular route that starts and ends at the Centre Interpretació de la Bruixeria. The Itinerari del Serrat Llobater also starts and ends there. A narrow forest path leads, as an optional extension, to Serrat Llobater at 695 metres, the highest point in the municipality. From there, wide panoramas take in Montserrat, Montseny and the Pyrenees. The Glorieta Vilaclara stands on Serrat de les Forques, with views stretching across Sant Feliu Sasserra, Oristà and Prats de Lluçanès.
Other paths pass through a varied cultural landscape. The Itinerari Balma de les Pastorelles runs through forests, cultivated fields and pastureland. The Itinerari cruĂŻlla del Pujalt crosses the Pla de Moixons, a former resting place for transhumant herds. It follows a flat path with good views and is suitable for all visitor groups.
The routes therefore differ in length, terrain and the landscapes they cross: the Serrat de les Forques route is described as a circular walk of a specific length, while the Llobater route combines a narrow forest path with an optional viewpoint. The Balma route alternates between forests, fields and pastureland; the former resting place and flat path are also part of the Pujalt route’s character.
Building history and living traditions
The Casa del Consell i Jurats del Lluçanès was built in 1611 to house the seat of the Cúria of the Sotsvegueria del Lluçanès. Its main façade features a Renaissance-style composition. A different period of construction can be seen in the Romanesque portal of the parish church of Sant Feliu: it is on the south façade and has a round-arched opening with two recessed archivolts. The portal preserves the decoration with which the religious building was adorned in the 12th century.
The Fira de les Bruixes has been held in Sant Feliu Sasserra on All Saints’ Day since 2000. Stalls selling handicrafts and esoteric products fill the streets and squares. The festival also includes theatrical performances recreating witches’ gatherings and trials, as well as the condemnation and execution of a witch. Another local tradition is the Treure Ball: it consists of 32 walking steps and 32 hopping steps. On the 16th beat, the dancer moves the bouquet above the young woman’s head.
