Prehistoric mines, a coastline with dune habitats and local traditions offer different perspectives on Gavà. During your stay, you can focus on local history, landscapes or culture. Visiting conditions also vary: the Museu de Gavà and the Parc Arqueològic Mines de Gavà are wheelchair accessible, while access to Eramprunyà Castle is restricted.

History and plant life at the Museu de Gavà

The permanent exhibition “Gavà, les veus del paisatge” traces the history of the area across six galleries. Original objects and grave goods from the prehistoric mines of Gavà connect the historical overview with finds from the area. A visit to the museum thus leads from the history of the area to specific objects associated with the mines.

The Museu de Gavà also includes an 800-square-metre botanical garden. It showcases plant communities typical of the Garraf, those of the delta plain, as well as crops. The exhibition and the garden therefore have different focuses: one centres on history and finds, the other on vegetation and its links to the landscape.

The Museu de Gavà and its exhibition spaces are wheelchair accessible. At the Parc Arqueològic Mines de Gavà, a modern interpretation centre provides orientation; the experience is fully accessible. The route is fully navigable by visitors with limited mobility and wheelchair users, including the reconstructed mine. If you rely on this accessibility, check the current visiting conditions before your visit.

Dune landscapes and the coast

The beaches of Gavà feature coastal habitats typical of dune systems. These include vegetation on shifting dunes, pine forests with Pinus pinea and wet habitats between the dunes. Those who want to make the coast the focus of their landscape exploration will find several specific features to look out for here.

The coast also has a two-kilometre-long promenade that takes the dune system and pine groves into account. This offers two distinct points of focus for a day on the coast: the habitats themselves and a promenade of a stated length. Which perspective best suits your stay depends on whether you would rather focus on the coastal landscape or the promenade.

Festivals and local traditions

The Fira d’Espàrrecs de Gavà brings together agricultural tradition, gastronomy, culture and city life. Its history began in 1932 as a celebration of Gavà’s own asparagus. The festival thus offers a different perspective on the town from the mining exhibition: its focus is on agricultural tradition and city life.

The Aplec de Bruguers is an annual tradition held on Easter Monday. A Mass, songs and sardanas are part of the gathering on the hermitage esplanade. The dates serve different purposes: Easter Monday marks the annual date of the Aplec, while 1932 marks the historical start of the asparagus festival.

Hiking and planning your visit

La ruta del Ferro leads into the Serra de les Ferreres. There, the landscape is shaped by Palaeozoic, iron-rich rock and abandoned mines. In Gavà, the section between the fire station park and the beach is also signposted as part of the Xarxa de Camins Turístics de Gavà and the Baix Llobregat hiking trail network. The two descriptions emphasise different things: La ruta del Ferro focuses on the geology of the Serra, while the section between the fire station park and the beach focuses on its place within two trail networks.

When visiting Eramprunyà Castle, take into account that access is restricted due to consolidation work. From October to June, guided tours take place on the second Sunday of each month. Check current access arrangements and dates before your visit.
