In Montseny, hiking can be combined with a rich cultural heritage: routes lead to springs and hermitages, while churches, exhibitions and recurring festivals offer their own insights into the area. When planning your visit, it is especially helpful to note the different time estimates for the routes, the fixed dates of some traditions and the requirement to request museum visits in advance.

Hiking: two different time frames

At a leisurely pace, the walk from Montseny to Font Ferrussa reaches the spring in about 20 minutes. It can be extended to approximately one hour. Along the way, the route offers panoramic views of Turó de l'Home, the lower part of the Tordera Valley and Serra del Corredor. This makes it a way to compare a shorter time estimate for reaching the spring with a longer route option.

More information about distance, difficulty and duration is available for the walk from Plaça de la Vila de Montseny to Sant Martí de Montseny. It follows the old royal road to the hermitage, is described as moderate, is a little over four kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half at a leisurely pace. The route follows the GR-5 and, for part of the way, also coincides with the Tourdera. Unlike the Font Ferrussa walk, this route has both an approximate duration and a difficulty rating.

The official Itinerari turístic de Montseny also offers its own way to find your bearings: it is an interactive route that uses QR codes on the municipal route signs. To visit Font de Sant Martí, a small path branches off from a straight stretch of road after the Sant Martí bend.

Churches, hermitages and traditions

Sant Marçal combines architectural history with a striking elevation: the church dates from the 11th century and was enlarged in the 12th century. Sant Marçal was also a Benedictine monastery, documented since 1053. The site lies at 1,093 metres between Les Agudes and Matagalls, near Font Bona, the symbolic source of the Tordera.

The annual Vot de Poble pilgrimage takes place at Sant Marçal on the Monday after Pentecost. The procession begins at Font Bona and makes its way to the hermitage; it includes a Mass and the renewal of the vow. The Aplec de Sant Martí takes place on a different annual date: it is held on the Sunday closest to 11 November. The programme includes a solemn service in the hermitage, the singing of Goigs and a communal meal, usually consisting of a rice dish.

Sant Julià del Montseny, a church of Romanesque origins in the town centre, preserves other traces of history. The bell tower and part of a wall remain from the original building. Sant Martí de Montseny, meanwhile, is a 17th-century hermitage. Those interested in local traditions can also see the Estela de la Calma, known as the Estela de la Sitja del Llop, which has been classified by the Generalitat de Catalunya as a movable asset of national interest.

Bells, landscapes and local produce

Les Esquelles d'en Jaume is a permanent exhibition at the Casal de Cultura in Montseny. It features almost 1,000 bells collected over the course of their lives by Jaume Traveria and Montserrat Garriga, who donated them to the area. The Punt d'Informació de Montseny organises visits to the exhibition and museum by prior request, so do not plan on dropping in without arranging a visit. The Fira de les Esquelles also focuses on a local theme through occupations related to sheep farming and includes guided tours of the exhibition. If you are planning your trip around a festival, check its exact date.

The Tordera shapes the landscape in different ways. Its upper course runs from the source through the municipal area and past the town centre. Gorg de l'Home is a long pool in the river, bordered by large, sheer rock formations. Gorg de les Dones d'Aigua is distinguished by a long pool with a substantial waterfall, shaded riverside vegetation and large, steeply descending rocks.

There is also a specific place to visit for a culinary discovery: La Cort Montseny sells and offers tastings of produce from its own harvest, including jams, preserves, chutneys and quince products. The Fira de les Esquelles and the bell exhibition offer different experiences, so you can choose according to whether you would like to focus on landscapes, traditions or local produce.
