Plan a trip to Palm Mar around three distinct themes: the coast, volcanic landscapes and archaeological traces. Guided kayaking and snorkelling excursions depart from Playa La Arenita; nearby Malpaís de Rasca offers a different focus, with rugged lava formations and historic remains. When choosing, it is worth considering water activities, hiking and cultural heritage separately.

Routes and connections

A protected-area regulation from 2004 identifies the TF-6225 as the main access road to Malpaís de Rasca; the road leads to Palm Mar. Road conditions and traffic regulations may change, so check the latest conditions before travelling. TITSA bus route 468 connects Palm Mar with Parque La Reina, Guaza, El Fraile, Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio and Guargacho. Check the timetable and stops before setting off, as both may change.

Volcanic landscapes and hiking

Malpaís de Rasca is designated a Special Nature Reserve. Volcanic lava flows have formed a rugged malpaís landscape there, with Montaña Grande standing out among its volcanic cones. The protected status and distinctive lava formations give the area a different character from Palm Mar’s coastal attractions. A hiking route through Malpaís de Rasca starts in El Fraile and runs for 3 km to the lighthouse. Check the condition of the path on site before planning your hike.

Coast and water activities

Playa La Arenita, on Paseo Palm-Mar, is one of Palm Mar’s visitor attractions. Palm-Mar Bay (El Bufadero), also known as Playa La Arenita, is recommended in southern Tenerife as one of the best places to snorkel and swim with turtles. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed; encounters with turtles and sea conditions vary. Guided kayaking and snorkelling excursions depart from Playa La Arenita. Availability and operators may change, so check in advance which excursions are currently offered.

For diving, Faro de Rasca offers a different point of reference: the dive site there is accessible by boat from the nearby port of Las Galletas. Underwater ravines formed by lava flows lie in front of the lighthouse. The activities therefore differ not only in theme but also in their starting points: kayaking and snorkelling excursions depart from Playa La Arenita, while the dive site at Faro de Rasca is reached by boat from Las Galletas.

Archaeology and history

The area between Malpaís de Rasca and the settlement of Palm Mar has exceptional cultural and heritage value. Malpaís de Rasca contains numerous archaeological remains from the time of the Indigenous inhabitants. These include remains of huts and shell middens, lithic material, pottery fragments and other structures associated with Indigenous settlement. Nearby Faro de Rasca dates from 1898 and adds another historical feature.

Arona ArqueoViva also focuses on archaeology: the experience invites visitors to spend a day taking on the role of archaeologists in a real-life setting. This offers a different way of engaging with the past from viewing the remains at Malpaís de Rasca. Those interested in cultural heritage can discover both tangible traces of settlement and an archaeological experience as a distinct way to explore.

Beach plaza

A public plaza directly on the beach in Palm Mar opened on 17 April 2026. At the time of its opening, it had landscaped and seating areas; it also expanded spaces for residents and visitors to spend time and meet, and improved the pedestrian connection to the seafront promenade. Public spaces may change, so check their current condition when you visit.
