Arona offers a range of highlights to consider when planning your trip: its historic centre, volcanic landscapes and coastline. You can choose to focus on culture, hiking or the sea. In the town centre, cobbled streets and civic architecture take centre stage; at MalpaĂs de Rasca, lava flows and endemic vegetation shape the landscape. Along the coast, beaches, designated surfing areas and boat trips to watch whales and dolphins add to the attractions. You can choose accommodation based on what matters most to you during your stay.

Historic Centre and Architectural History

Arona’s historic centre was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) on 3 April 2006. A walking tour takes you along cobbled streets such as Domínguez Alfonso and Duque de la Torre, as well as through the side streets of La Luna and del Medio. Mansions and other buildings reflect the development of civic architecture since the 18th century.

The parish church of San Antonio Abad also tells the story of several building phases: its present-day appearance dates from the late 18th century, and it was rebuilt in the 19th century. It stands on the site of a former 17th-century chapel. Inside the single-nave church, a polychrome wooden retablo—a painted altar screen—covers the entire back wall.

“Arona en Tradiciones” brings together music, gastronomy, traditional games and sports, handicrafts and folklore in the historic centre. The programme is updated annually. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates for your preferred travel period.

Volcanic Landscapes and Hiking Routes

MalpaĂs de Rasca is characterised by volcanic lava flows and a rugged landscape. Its vegetation includes coastal and inland Cardonal-Tabaibal communities, as well as numerous endemic species. One route runs from El Fraile to the lighthouse: it is 3 kilometres long, takes about 1.5 hours and is rated easy. Within the protected area, a paved track also serves as an adapted, step-free route for people with reduced mobility.

Montaña de Guaza is a natural monument covering 725.7 hectares in the municipality of Arona. The route described here starts on its northern flank, on the TF-6223 road, and climbs to the 430-metre summit. It descends along the southern side to Playa del Callao, then continues for 6.5 kilometres to Los Cristianos. Some pre-Hispanic burials have been discovered on the Mesas de Guaza. Several quarries date back at least to the late 17th century.

Other routes offer different experiences. One hike starts in Valle San Lorenzo and returns to its starting point after 3 kilometres through the Barranco de Chija. An 8.5-kilometre route starts in the town of Arona at the Charcas de Ancón, passes Roque de Imoque and Montaña de Suárez, and ends near its starting point after crossing the Barranco del Rey. The two 3-kilometre routes therefore follow different courses: the Malpaís route runs from El Fraile to the lighthouse, while the Chija route returns to its starting point.

Arona has several mountain bike trails approved by Tenerife’s environmental authority. As permits and conditions may change, check the latest guidance before setting out.

Coast, Beaches and Boat Trips

Playa de Las Américas is 500 metres long and has golden sand, showers and adapted access for people with reduced mobility. The beaches around Los Cristianos also have adapted access. Beach services may change, so check in advance that the facilities you need will be available during your visit.

Playa de Las Américas has designated surfing areas: Fitenia, La Izquierda, El Medio, La Derecha and El Dedo. Information on the designation and use of these areas may change; check the latest guidance before surfing. Ferry services from the port of Los Cristianos connect Tenerife with La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Operators and services may change, so it is worth checking the timetable as you plan your trip.

Boat trips also depart from the port, offering the chance to observe different species of whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. As operators and availability may change, check the latest trip options for your travel dates.

Choosing Your Travel Interests and Accommodation

The culinary scene also varies: in Zona Alta, traditional Canarian cuisine, local produce, regional cheeses and stews are part of the rural setting. These add a regional food experience to the cultural highlights of the historic centre and the natural and coastal attractions.

If you are looking for a hotel in Arona, first decide whether local history, hiking routes, the coast or food will be the main focus of your trip.
