Almáciga can be discovered through three distinct aspects: the beach at the foot of the hamlet, trails in the Anaga Mountains, and devotion to the Virgen de Begoña. This mix gives your stay different focal points. You can explore the coast, include one of the named hiking trails, or learn about the town’s religious and historical heritage. Which of these aspects takes priority for your trip is a good starting point for planning.

Playa de Almáciga and the Coast

Playa de Almáciga lies at the foot of the hamlet of Almáciga, within the Parque Rural de Anaga. Its surface is varied: areas of black sand alternate with stony stretches. So if you plan to spend time at the beach, you won’t find sand everywhere. Its location by the hamlet and within the protected area also gives the beach a clear connection to Almáciga and the Anaga landscape.

Currents at the beach can vary, and the surf is usually quite strong throughout the year. Check local warnings before swimming and take the conditions on the day of your visit into account. Several surf schools on the island train at the beach; if you want to include this in your plans, check the latest information in advance.

Hiking Trails Connected to Almáciga

PR TF 04.1 Mirador de Amogoje–Almáciga is designated as a short-distance PR hiking trail in the Anaga Mountains. For this trail, bus route 946 is listed for the outward journey to Mirador de Amogoje and the return journey from Almáciga to the Santa Cruz Intercambiador. Check the latest TITSA information before travelling so you can factor the stated directions into your day’s plans.

PR TF 06.2 connects Roque de Las Bodegas, Almáciga, Benijo and El Draguillo. The trails have different focuses: PR TF 04.1 is described as a short-distance hiking trail between Mirador de Amogoje and Almáciga, while PR TF 06.2 links four places along its route. You can use these differences to choose which places you would like to include in your plans. Check for the latest trail notices before setting out, too.

The Begoña Tradition in Almáciga

The town has a temple dedicated to the Virgen de Begoña, who comes from Bilbao; María de Begoña is Almáciga’s patron saint. This devotion is connected with the arrival on the coast of Almáciga of a bottle containing her image. On 14 May 1950, the image was placed in the local hermitage. The present-day Church of the Virgen de Begoña was inaugurated on 1 June 2019.

Alongside the coast and hiking trails, these details offer a distinct cultural perspective on Almáciga, tracing the story from local devotion and the history of the image to the inauguration of the present-day church. If you would also like to take the town’s history into account on your trip, the Begoña tradition offers a specific point of interest.
