Irregularly laid-out streets, traditional water points and washing areas shape a walk through the historic center of Guía de Isora. The town’s history ranges from rural residential architecture to art and religious heritage. Some hiking trails also take you past archaeological traces, while other routes lead into the surroundings of Teide National Park.
Historic Town Center and Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Luz
The historic center was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2009. Its architectural heritage includes 18th-century rural residential architecture alongside 19th-century civic and religious buildings. The irregularly laid-out streets, traditional water points and washing areas are also part of the townscape, which can be explored on a walk.
A key site in the area’s religious history is Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Luz: it was the first religious building constructed in Guía de Isora in the 16th century. The church houses altarpieces, sculptures, paintings, numerous goldsmith works and an embroidered mantle from the 18th century. Images on display there include Nuestra Señora de la Luz and Cristo de la Dulce Muerte.
Art and Archaeological Traces
The Manuel Martín González exhibition is housed in the cultural administration building in the historic center. Two rooms have different focuses: the first displays advertising art created during the artist’s stay in Cuba from 1923 to 1932; the second presents a selection of his landscape paintings. Check access details before planning a specific visit.
Hiking trails also tell the story of earlier settlement. Some follow original routes used by the indigenous population to reach the summit region. Along these trails, you can see burial caves, domestic areas, sites with cup marks and rock engravings. Near Aripe are the Grabados de Aripe, the first dated example of rock art in Tenerife. These archaeological traces give the trails a historical dimension that goes beyond their routes.
Hiking Trails and Practical Conditions
The network of trails in Guía de Isora includes various routes in the surroundings of Teide National Park. PR-TF 70 is a 17.5-kilometer linear hiking trail from Guía de Isora to Boca Tauce. It begins at the church in Guía de Isora and passes ovens, threshing floors and threshing areas before reaching Chirche. The route is also connected with Corona Forestal Natural Park and Teide National Park.
As of August 27, 2026, access along PR-TF 70 was closed; at the same time, 6.5 kilometers were listed as open. Check the current status and the section you plan to use before setting out on a hike. The Mountain Race in Guía de Isora’s town center usually offers a long and a short route, as well as a hiking route.
Festivals Throughout the Year
Día de las Tradiciones is held every year on the second weekend of July in Chirche, which lies within the municipality of Guía de Isora. The festival reenacts rural scenes from the mid-20th century, including fieldwork, washing clothes, making charcoal and traditional bread-making. Check the program for the relevant year, as some demonstrations may vary.
Another annual event is Pascua Florida, held during Holy Week in Guía de Isora and combining artistic creativity with tradition. La quema de Lucas dates back to 1794: every year on San Juan, an effigy is burned; today, competitions, dances and costumes accompany the tradition. The three events therefore differ both in form and in when they take place during the year.
Views, Volcanic Landscapes and Local Sweets
Mirador de Chirche offers panoramic views of the coast and mid-altitude areas. It is also a strategic viewpoint for stargazing enthusiasts. Another landscape feature is Montaña de Tejina: the volcanic landscape is flanked by the deep Guaria and Cuéscara ravines. The views of the coast and mid-altitude areas and the ravine-sculpted volcanic landscape offer two distinct perspectives.
Local culinary traditions include Rosquetes, Huesitos, Tortas de almendras and Truchas. Dulcería Isora in the historic center began operating in 1905; sweets are still made there using traditional methods and recipes. If you are planning a specific visit, check visiting arrangements in advance.
