Salt pans, birdwatching and heritage give Sant Francesc de s'Estany its varied character. In the landscape of the ses Salines Natural Park, you will encounter wetlands and flamingos; at the same time, the church, salt harbour and exhibitions on salt trace the area's history. When planning a visit, you can focus on nature or culture according to your interests.

Salt Pans and Birdwatching

The salt pans of ses Salines are located in Sant Francesc de s'Estany. Flamingos can be seen at the various ponds practically all year round; the best periods are after summer and in autumn. If you would like to observe flamingos, these seasons provide a useful guide. More than 200 bird species also live in the park; the number may vary depending on the year of the survey. Some of the species found in the park can be observed from viewpoints by the wetlands.

A birdwatching platform is located opposite the church of Sant Francesc de s'Estany, next to the monument to the salt workers. It is beside the wetlands and is intended for birdwatching. Access to the salt pans themselves is prohibited; the paths along their edges are open to visitors. Please follow the current local regulations.

Salt as a Theme at the Interpretation Centre

At the Centro de Interpretación de Sant Francesc, a salt exhibition features modern images and old tools used to produce salt. The striking images are displayed alongside tools from earlier times. At the end of the visit, an audiovisual presentation about the park's natural and landscape values, including its marine environment, is shown.

The Centro de Interpretación is on road 802 towards ses Salines and sa Canal. It can be reached on foot, by vehicle, by bicycle or by bus. Bus options listed are Ibiza Bus and ALSA routes 11 and 11 B. Check the connections before setting off to ensure your travel plans match the services available.

Church, Salt Harbour and Heritage

The whitewashed parish church of Sant Francesc de s'Estany dates from the 18th century. The Ruta de sa Sal Rossa can begin here. The church therefore provides a specific starting point for anyone wishing to include a named route in their visit plans. The picturesque salt harbour of sa Canal is also part of Sant Francesc de s'Estany and adds to the local attractions associated with the salt landscape.

Ibiza's heritage also includes Sa Caleta, which UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. The archaeological site is associated with what is believed to have been the first Phoenician town in the Pityuses. Another historic landmark is the watchtower of sa Sal Rossa, a coastal fortification dating from the 18th century. The church, archaeological site and watchtower each represent a different aspect of the island's history.

For a nature-focused visit, the salt pans, seasonal flamingo sightings and the platform by the wetlands offer specific points of interest. If you are particularly interested in salt and its significance in the landscape, you can combine the exhibition at the Centro with the salt harbour of sa Canal. The church adds architecture to the visit and can also serve as a possible starting point for the Ruta de sa Sal Rossa. This lets you tailor your choices to the themes that interest you most during your stay.
