Clay pots on house façades and rooflines, ornate portals and a long pottery tradition shape the cultural character of Bandalíes. The village also has a ceramics museum, notable historic buildings and a pilgrimage held on a set date. If you would like to plan your stay around cultural discoveries, the village offers several different themes, from craftsmanship to architectural history.

Pottery Tradition and Ceramics

Pottery is closely associated with Bandalíes. The Abió family keeps a pottery workshop with more than 700 years of activity alive. The ceramics museum presents the village’s former pottery tradition, which focused on fire ceramics, including pots and casseroles. Soup tureens were also among the leading products of this craft. The tradition of craftsmanship and the history of particular types of household pottery thus stand side by side: one points to the continuing workshop, the other to the products for which Bandalíes was known.

You can also spot ceramics in the village itself: clay pots adorn the façades and rooflines of houses. Together with the manor houses, whose portals are finely decorated and whose façades display coats of arms, they create an architectural connection to local tradition. The ceramics museum focuses on the former production of fire ceramics; the clay pots on the houses, by contrast, are a feature of the built environment. If you are interested in cultural heritage, it is worth appreciating these as distinct facets of the village.

Portals, Materials and Building Styles

The historic buildings display different combinations of materials and design. Casa Vallés has one of the most richly ornamented portals on a civic building in the Hoya de Huesca. At Casa Suelves, a round-arched portal is paired with decorated jambs featuring rectangular fluting. On the voussoir above the entrance arch of Casa Batalla de Bandaliés is the signature of stonemason Francisco Laspalas. Each of the three examples draws attention to a different detail: rich portal ornamentation, crafted door jambs and the mason’s name inscribed on the arch.

The buildings themselves also differ. Casa Bara is a large, elongated building divided into three storeys and made of ashlar, brick and rammed earth; its tiled roof has three slopes. Casa Arnal is a traditional three-storey building made of ashlar and white-rendered, painted rammed earth. Casa Suelves also has three storeys and combines white-rendered, painted ashlar with rammed earth. The comparison shows that, alongside ornamentation, materials and building styles also distinguish the houses described.

Another building is the house at Plaza Mayor 15: it has three storeys and is made of ashlar and rammed earth, with later brickwork additions. The year 1745 is engraved on the lintel. Together with the portals and the different roof and façade styles, this provides a broad picture of local architecture, whose distinctive features are not limited to a single grand house.

Church, Hermitage and Pilgrimage

The parish church of Santa María stands in the village square. From its tower, you can enjoy views of the Sierra and Tozal de Guara. The Ermita de San Pedro lies about 600 metres south of Bandalíes. It can be reached from the A-1227 via an unsigned path. The building has a single nave, a rectangular floor plan, exterior buttresses and a flat-ended chancel facing east. Its clearly identifiable architectural features also make it easy to describe.

One date in the annual calendar is the pilgrimage to the Virgen del Viñedo, held in Bandalíes on 1 May. If you want to plan your trip around this occasion, check the event dates before making your arrangements. The BTT cycling route Abadiado de Montearagón is a separate activity. It runs from the Ermita de la Virgen del Viñedo via Loporzano and Bandalíes and back to its starting point. So both its start and finish are at the Ermita de la Virgen del Viñedo, not the Ermita de San Pedro. The two destinations offer different points of reference for exploring the village’s cultural heritage and surroundings.
