Morillo de Tou brings together historical cultural attractions and outdoor activities. The castle, church architecture and ceramic tradition each have their own appeal; at the same time, circular hiking routes and a signposted mountain bike trail start in Morillo de Tou. For your travel planning, this means you can choose between different priorities: focus on the structural remains and church architecture, or explore the surrounding area on one of the routes. The hiking trails differ in their stated difficulty and character, while the cycling route follows a named circular course.

The Castle and Church Architecture

The Castillo de Morillo de Tou is designated a protected archaeological site of cultural interest (BIC). The castle includes largely preserved sections of wall, as well as the remains of a former Romanesque church. The church associated with the castle is known locally as “la Atalaya”. It stands on a hill overlooking the entire valley.

The Iglesia de Santa Ana has a Latin cross floor plan. Its choir has a flat end and faces east. These two features describe both the church’s layout and the orientation of its choir.

Ceramics at the Iglesia de Santa Ana

The Museo de Alfarería Tradicional Aragonesa is permanently housed in the Iglesia de Santa Ana. It displays a collection donated by Emilio Manrique Persiva and Ana Rosa Abadía Valle in 2001. The museum and the Jornadas de Alfarería y Cerámica offer two different ways to engage with the ceramic tradition: a permanent collection and an annual event. The Jornadas have been held every year in Morillo de Tou since 2004. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates in advance.

Hiking: Two Circular Routes with Different Characters

The circular route to Cerro de Cotón starts at Camping Morillo de Tou. It is 5.5 kilometres long, takes around 2 to 2.5 hours and has 230 metres of elevation gain. The hike is considered moderately difficult and offers views of the Embalse de Mediano and the historic Torre de Tou. The distance, approximate duration and elevation gain give you concrete points of reference for assessing the effort involved.

Another circular route leads from Morillo de Tou towards the reservoir and on to Coscojuela. It is described as easily accessible and suitable for a leisurely family outing. The hikes therefore have different points of emphasis: the route to Cerro de Cotón is notable for its moderate difficulty and route details, while the route towards the reservoir is described as an easily accessible, peaceful family outing.

Mountain Biking

The signposted BTT 09 “Entorno de Bruello” mountain bike circuit runs from Morillo de Tou via Cruceta de Bruello and Bruello, then back to Morillo de Tou. This provides a named circular cycling route in addition to the hiking trails. Check the signage and trail conditions before setting off. This allows you to include the cycling circuit as a separate activity in your plans, without conflating it with the hiking routes, which are described in different terms.
