In Guaso, a Romanesque church, houses with historic defensive features and a mountain biking circuit through the village offer different ways to explore. On another route towards Santa María de Buil, you can observe a change in rock types. Get to know Guaso through its architecture and trails, with distinctive features that appeal to both cultural and landscape interests.

The church and the village’s religious history

The parish church of El Salvador is in Barrio del Tozal, the highest of Guaso’s neighbourhoods. Its Romanesque core dates from the mid-12th century. The church has a single-nave layout and a semicircular apse. These features not only help date the building: the single longitudinal space and rounded apse also give a clear sense of its architectural design.

The Esconjuradero de Guaso reveals another facet of the village’s history. The parish priest, chaplain or sacristan used it to recite prayers against storms. These were intended to divert storms away from the village or prevent damage. This function connects the site with a religious practice explicitly concerned with the dangers posed by storms.

Casa Bara and Casa Juan de Broto

Casa Bara and its tower date from the 16th century. Each floor of the tower has vertical loopholes. Each has a rectangular slit and a circular opening, positioned either in the middle or lower down. This repeated pattern makes the loopholes a distinctive feature of the tower’s architecture.

Casa Juan de Broto offers a different perspective on the historic buildings: the house has been extensively altered, but retains features attached to its main façade. The architecture of the two houses can therefore be explored through different details: the date and regular openings of Casa Bara’s tower, and the alterations and surviving façade features of Casa Juan de Broto.

Mountain biking routes and rocks

The “Ruta 0 Aínsa-Margudgued-Guaso-Aínsa” circuit passes through Guaso. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Another mountain biking route runs from Guaso towards Santa María de Buil. There, you can observe a transition from deep-marine, grey-blue rocks to reddish rocks formed by rivers and streams.

This change also makes the route interesting from a geological perspective: the different colours here represent rocks formed in different settings—deep in the sea on the one hand, and by rivers and streams on the other. If you are interested in the landscape not just as a backdrop but also in its geological history, this particular transition is a distinctive feature of the route.

There is also a walk associated with a named location: a 2019 walking guide describes a walk near Guaso that passes the Mirador de la Cruceta. For specific planning, consult an up-to-date route description.

Planning your stay

Guaso is about 15 minutes from Aínsa, in the direction of Sierra y Cañones de Guara Park. This is an approximate time; road conditions may affect the journey. It gives you a rough point of reference from Aínsa, while the church, historic houses and routes described here define Guaso’s own character.
