The more than 100-meter-deep Tajo del Ronda gorge divides the city of Ronda. Puente Nuevo connects the Mercadillo and Ciudad districts; at some points, the bridge is about 98 meters high and 70 meters long. The gorge and bridge together shape Ronda’s cityscape. Those looking for a destination that combines landscape and urban structure will find a clear thematic starting point here.

Cityscape between Gorge and Bridge

Plaza de Toros de Ronda is considered one of Spain’s oldest and most monumental bullrings. Its construction took six years, and it was inaugurated in 1785. Sandstone, two arcaded galleries and the absence of open spectator stands define its architecture. At the Plaza, visitors can see a collection on the art of bullfighting, the Real Guarnicionería de la casa de Orleans, the Galería Ecuestre and the history room of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda. Opening hours may change, so check the current visiting times before your visit.

Construction History and Former Use

Iglesia de Santa María La Mayor stands on the site of Ronda’s former main mosque. Construction began in 1485 and was completed at the end of the 17th century. The site’s former use as the main mosque and the lengthy construction process are part of its history.

The construction timelines differ considerably: Plaza de Toros was built over six years and inaugurated in 1785; work on the Iglesia began in 1485 and was completed at the end of the 17th century.

Casa del Rey Moro: Garden, House and Mina

Casa del Rey Moro comprises three distinct elements: the Mina de Agua, which dates back to the Muslim period; a Neo-Mudéjar house; and a garden designed by Jean Nicolas Forestier in 1912. The house is currently being restored; the historic garden is currently open to visitors. Before your trip, check the arrangements for visiting the garden. The Mina de Agua descends through a gallery to the riverbed of the Guadalevín, about 60 meters below. As physical access conditions may change, check them before visiting.

Wine from Ronda: Tours and Tastings

Bodegas Excelencia offers guided winery tours where visitors can learn about the production processes in the vineyard and wine cellar. Arrangements may need to be made in advance for these visits. The climate-controlled tasting room overlooks the vineyard and accommodates no more than 14 people; confirm its availability before your visit.

The Centro Integral del Vino de Ronda has an exhibition and a shop selling wines from Ronda. Wine tastings and workshops on agricultural and food products are also held there. Dates may change, so check them in advance. The focus can help you choose between the two offerings: Bodegas Excelencia focuses on production processes in the vineyard and cellar, while the Centro offers an exhibition as well as tastings and workshops.
