The GR-7.9 variant passes through Cartaojal and offers two clearly defined sections to consider when planning a hike. The area is also home to churches with different histories, as well as events rooted in religious tradition and Flamenco. If you are considering Cartaojal as a destination or a place to stay overnight, you can plan your visit around specific trail distances, architectural history or a cultural event.

Hiking routes with similar but separate stages

The GR-7.9 variant runs through Cartaojal via the school, the cemetery, the water tanks and the path towards Cuevas Bajas. The section between Antequera and Cartaojal is 11.1 kilometres long; the section between Cartaojal and Cuevas Bajas is 14.6 kilometres. The latter section is 3.5 kilometres longer. When choosing a route, it is therefore important to consider which of the two sections interests you: the one between Antequera and Cartaojal or the one towards Cuevas Bajas.

The Camino Mozárabe de Santiago reaches Cartaojal from Antequera via an 11.4-kilometre stage. This distance is close to the 11.1 kilometres of the GR-7.9 section between the same towns; however, the figures refer to different routes. If you are weighing up the options, first distinguish between the Camino Mozárabe stage and the GR-7.9 variant. Similar distances do not make the two routes the same.

Churches with different histories

Cartaojal’s parish church was built in the 18th century. The Iglesia del Purísimo Corazón de María has a different origin: it was established around 1954 in an old chapel or hermitage. Two former school buildings were later added on either side of the chapel and are now used as parish halls. Their histories therefore mark different periods: the church built in the 18th century was followed by another church established in an older chapel. The former use of the school buildings, and their current use as parish halls, are also part of the history of this complex.

Religious events and Flamenco

Two religious celebrations in July are associated with different dates. Santiago is celebrated in Cartaojal on 25 July. The celebration in honour of María Auxiliadora takes place on the first Sunday in July and includes a procession from the parish church to the pilgrimage site. The Santiago celebration therefore falls on a fixed date, while the date for María Auxiliadora is determined by the first Sunday. If one of these celebrations is the reason for your trip, check the exact date when planning.

The Flamenco events also offer different highlights. Noche Flamenca de Cartaojal takes place annually, is organised by the Peña Flamenca de Cartaojal Paco de Antequera, and celebrates the art and tradition of Flamenco. Porra Flamenca brings Flamenco and Copla together. The 2026 edition of the Flamenco-related conference series brings Flamenco enthusiasts and experts together. These events offer a range of cultural experiences: an annual Flamenco event, a combination of two genres and a conference format. If you are travelling for an event, check the dates for the relevant edition.

A seasonal extra in summer

The Piscina Municipal de Cartaojal was open to residents, families and visitors during the 2026 summer season. Opening days and operating details vary by season. If a visit to the swimming pool is important to your trip, check the information for the relevant season in advance. This seasonal option can be included in your plans separately from the dates of religious celebrations or annual Flamenco events.
