Colmenar combines historic religious buildings with a landscape of rocky mountains, olive groves and grain fields. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether church architecture, agricultural culture or scenery should be your main focus. Culinary experiences are also part of the Fiesta del Mosto y la Chacina.

Historic Churches and Architectural Styles

The Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was completed in 1658. Its interior is divided into three naves separated by pillars; a certain Mudéjar influence is still visible in the tower. Its construction period, layout and tower offer different points of interest if you are interested in religious architecture.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria dates from the early 17th century; Colmenar’s patron saint is venerated there. Unlike the parish church, it has a single nave and includes a presbytery and a Camarín. The latter is a work from 1719, with a hemispherical dome and lavish Baroque decoration. The dates therefore distinguish the period when the hermitage was built from the date of the Camarín. In 1996, the hermitage was entered on the register for designation as a monument.

Agricultural Architecture and Cultural Heritage

The Museo de Historia y Tradiciones de Colmenar y los Montes de Málaga is dedicated to interpreting and celebrating the agricultural architecture of the mountains of Málaga from the 16th to the 19th century. This includes mountain wine presses, known as lagares de montaña. They are a concrete example of the museum’s subject and complement the focus on religious buildings with rural architecture. The museum is currently listed as closed; check whether access is possible before visiting.

Landscape Between Mountains and Farmland

Colmenar’s landscape includes rocky mountains to the north and south, with olive groves and grain fields to the east and west. The Sierra de Camarolos is considered one of the most scenic areas of Colmenar. The landscape thus brings rocky mountain areas and land shaped by agriculture together.

Festival and Getting There

At the Fiesta del Mosto y la Chacina, vendors offered cured meats, cheeses, wines, extra virgin olive oil, bread and sweets for sale. The program also included a tapas route through the bars in Colmenar’s town center. The range of products and the program may vary from one edition to another. Check the dates and details of the relevant edition before your trip.
