For planning your trip to Jimera de Líbar, the river landscape, routes and local history offer three specific starting points. The Río Guadiaro runs through the town and irrigates the vegetable gardens and fruit trees there. Several routes have clearly named start and end points; they differ in where they begin and where they lead. You can make the river, the route itself or the historical themes the focus of your stay.

River Routes and Getting Around

The Río Guadiaro route connects Jimera de Líbar and Benaoján and runs parallel to the Río Guadiaro. It begins at Jimera de Líbar railway station. From the station, first cross the level crossing and shortly afterward the bridge over the river. The station is therefore also the starting point for this route. Check local conditions and any access changes before setting out.

The La Dehesa route runs from a path at the edge of Jimera de Líbar to the Barriada de la Estación in the La Dehesa area, by the Río Guadiaro. Cañada del Olivar begins near the Barriada de la Estación in the La Dehesa area and ends at the MA-508, a few metres from Jimera de Líbar. The named start and end points are the main difference: the Barriada is the destination on the La Dehesa route, while Cañada del Olivar ends at the MA-508 road. Check current trail conditions in advance for both routes.

Jimera de Líbar also has a railway station on the Bobadilla–Algeciras line. If you plan to include a train journey in your stay, check the timetable for your travel date.

Local History and Archaeological Sites

The tower beside the parish church was once the minaret of a mosque during Muslim rule. It provides a specific architectural point of reference for the town’s history, distinct from the archaeological sites that offer further historical insights.

Jimera de Líbar has significant Bronze Age archaeological remains. At the El Tesoro site, about four kilometres from the town, there are remains dating from the Phoenician colonisation.

Canoeing and Festivals

For a different kind of activity, Jimera de Líbar has a nautical station and a canoeing centre. If you plan to go canoeing, check current operating conditions in advance.

Festivities in honour of the patron saint, Virgen de la Salud, take place in Jimera de Líbar on the second Sunday in August. The Romería in her honour includes religious events as well as a celebration with dancing and music. The Fiesta del Agua is also celebrated in Jimera de Líbar. If you would like to plan your visit around an event, check the exact date and programme in advance.
