The Castillo-Fortaleza de Sancho IV “El Bravo” and the cromlech in its courtyard bring together two distinctive aspects of Cumbres Mayores: medieval heritage and megaliths. Historic buildings, local festivals and trails through the surrounding area add to the appeal. You can plan your stay around culture, hikes or the dates of a traditional celebration.

Castle, megaliths and a walking route

The construction of the Castillo-Fortaleza de Sancho IV “El Bravo” is dated in Toro to 4 November 1293, based on a privilege granted by King Sancho IV. On 2 August 1895, Alfonso XIII declared the castle the first National Monument in the province of Huelva. These two dates mark different chapters in its history: its origins in the Middle Ages and its early recognition as a monument.

The cromlech lies in the castle courtyard and is considered the only documented example to date of this type of megalithic monument inside a medieval fortress. During restoration, ten of the 40 documented menhirs were returned to their original positions in the first circle. Wooden walkways and paths form a visitor route around the monument. A complete circuit along the Paseo de Ronda is approximately one kilometre long.

Churches and other buildings

The Iglesia Parroquial San Miguel Arcángel is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural and was entered in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage on 13 October 2010. The church preserves the most complete collection of American heritage currently held by the Diocese of Huelva. The oldest part of the Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza dates from the early 14th century.

Only the portal remains of the Portada del Convento de Santa Clara. It features 15th-century Late Gothic style and belonged to one of the most important convent buildings in Cumbres Mayores. The Puente Romano tells a different story: it connected Nertóbriga with Turóbriga and helped cross the Río Sillo. The Plaza de Toros also stands out for its unusual design; it is considered one of the few atypical bullrings in Andalusia.

Dances, festivals and local cuisine

The Danzas de Cumbres Mayores are listed in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage as an activity of ethnological interest in the “Ritual Dances of Huelva” category. The dances are performed inside the parish church and in the streets, including during Corpus Christi processions, religious events and the celebration of the Virgen del Amparo on 8 September. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates and programme in advance.

Día de los Jarros takes place every year on 14 August. Residents throw water at one another in remembrance of an earlier pilgrimage to the Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia, which stood among the mountains of the Sierra Morena. For Corpus Christi, young bulls are released along Calle Mayor, La Portá, towards the square beside the Castillo de Sancho IV.

Cumbres Mayores is known for its Iberian pork sausage and meat industry. Businesses specialising in Iberian pork, bakery products, wine and olive oil take part in the Feria Gastronómica “Saborea Cumbres Mayores”; participation may vary from one edition to the next. The Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza festival features the “Bollo Repiquiñeao” as a traditional snack: an anise-flavoured bread shaped like a lizard and topped with a colourful decorated boiled egg.

Hiking trails and scenery

Stages 3 and 4 of the GR-48 “Sendero Sierra Morena” pass through the municipal area. A GR-48 stage is mostly suitable for hiking, cycling and horse riding; some sections narrow into paths and cross rocky terrain. Check trail conditions before setting out. For the hiking trail from Cumbres de Enmedio to Cumbres Mayores, the signed starting point is north of Cumbres Mayores, next to a viewpoint. On the way to Cumbres Mayores, views open up over the valleys of the Múrtigas and Sillo rivers.

Another connection is the Camino de las Tres Cumbres. It links Cumbres de San Bartolomé, Cumbres de Enmedio and Cumbres Mayores within the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. This offers a choice of different hiking experiences: the GR-48 stages, the trail between the two Cumbres towns, and a route connecting three towns in the natural park. For specific hikes, it is worth checking current trail conditions.
