Almonaster La Real is a municipality in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park; at the same time, a protected historic ensemble defines the town. Buildings, local traditions and a circular hiking route offer travelers different points of interest, depending on whether they want to focus on cultural history or nature.

Mosque, church and historic buildings

The historic ensemble of Almonaster La Real is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Historic Ensemble. The protected area includes the hill with the castle-mosque. The Mezquita de Almonaster la Real was built between the 9th and 10th centuries. It is considered an exceptionally valuable historic and artistic ensemble, and the only mosque in Spain to have survived almost intact to the present day in a rural setting.

Another protected building is the Iglesia Parroquial de San Martín, listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Monument. Its Puerta del Perdón displays a different architectural character: the portal is made of gray limestone and built in the Portuguese Manueline style. This style is represented by only a few examples in Spain. Travelers interested in architectural history can therefore explore different religious buildings, each with its own distinctive design.

The bullring is next to the castle and the mosque. It was inaugurated on July 19, 1821, and its circular interior has a diameter of 32 meters. Its date and measurements also help put this building into context. It adds another aspect of the town’s history to its religious architecture, without requiring visitors to plan around an event date.

The Centro de Interpretación de la Cultura Islámica introduces visitors to Almonaster’s Islamic heritage and the cultural area of the town and the wider Sierra. This broadens the focus beyond individual buildings to include the surrounding cultural area.

Hiking in the natural park

For those wishing to include a hike in their plans, the Subida al Cerro de San CristĂłbal circular route has specific details: it is 5.67 kilometers long, takes a stated 2 hours and 30 minutes, and is rated difficult. The route climbs to the third-highest peak in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park and one of its most important viewpoints. Its length, estimated time and difficulty level can help visitors weigh up this hike as a separate focus alongside sightseeing.

The Sendero Cortegana–Almonaster la Real PR-A 5 offers another point of reference. Its endpoint is less than one kilometer from the entrance to Almonaster La Real. Whereas the circular route has a stated length, duration and difficulty, this information describes the location of the trail’s endpoint relative to the town entrance. The two routes can therefore be considered using different planning details.

Traditions and local cuisine

Music and festivals are also among the town’s cultural attractions. The Fandango de Almonaster, also known as the Fandango de Santa Eulalia, is associated with the town’s pilgrimage to the Dehesa de la Arguijuela. The biennial Matanza Vegetal takes place in the hamlet of Calabazares. The festival celebrates cultivation in vegetable gardens and the preservation of plant products and their seeds. The two traditions have different emphases: music associated with the pilgrimage in one case, and gardening and the preservation of seeds and produce in the other.

Another heritage site, located elsewhere in the municipality rather than in the town center, is the Zona Arqueológica de Santa Eulalia, also known as the Zona arqueológica de Santa Eulalia y Ermita de Santa Eulalia, which is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Almonaster la Real’s cuisine includes game meat and cured meats made from Iberian pork. The range of attractions therefore extends beyond architecture and hiking to include musical traditions, agriculture and regional food.
