On the hill above Cala stands a small fortress dating from around the 13th century; the former mining railway tells the story of transporting minerals to the port of Seville. There is also church and hermitage architecture, as well as trails through cork oak forests. For your stay, you can focus on heritage, mining history, hiking or the dates of local festivals.

Castle, Church and Hermitage

Castillo de Cala is a small fortress built on the hill above the town during Muslim rule, around the 13th century. A path to the castle starts at Hostal La Muralla; check local conditions before setting out. The Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena dates from the 13th to 14th centuries and was built in the early Gothic-Mudéjar style. Its altar holds an altarpiece from the school of Alejo Fernández, dating from the early 16th century. Visits to the church interior outside of services are coordinated locally.

You can reach Ermita Nuestra Señora de Cala directly from the town via Paseo de la Ermita. Check local access conditions before your visit. The hermitage stands on the site of an ancient Roman building; fragments of imperial-era tombstones are set into its walls. It is also one of the few buildings in Huelva in the transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic. The fortress, church and hermitage therefore offer different points of interest if you are exploring Cala primarily for its architectural and artistic history.

Mining, Glass and Railway

Groups can visit the Minas de Cala by appointment; confirm the appointment before your trip. Roman workings left behind a large excavation known as Galería Romana. The Minas de la Sultana tell a different mining story: exploitation began in 1903, and the mine has been inactive for more than 60 years. It had significant copper deposits in particular, as well as some gold.

Near the Minas del Teuler, you can see the ruins of Casa del Teuler. The former manor house, built in the English colonial style, was constructed by Germans to house engineers working at the mine. Glassmaking is also part of Cala’s history: glass furnaces existed as early as the Middle Ages, and the industry remained highly significant in the 16th century.

The Cala mining railway opened in August 1905. It was used to transport minerals for export to the port of Seville. Today, you can explore remains of the tracks and railway routes of the Ferrocarril de Cala via signposted routes and paths. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

Cala is one of the municipalities in Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. One specific hiking option is the Sendero de los Contrabandistas: this 6.5-kilometre circular route passes through cork oak forests and is classed as easy. Halfway along, the Las Tres Encinas picnic area offers a place to rest. Check trail conditions and local facilities before setting out.

The Sendero Santa Olalla del Cala–Minas del Teuler–Cala is mostly flat and accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. This distinguishes it from the Sendero de los Contrabandistas, whose circular route, length and difficulty level are specified. The route between Cala and Santa Olalla del Cala has fresh water and green vegetation; birds and amphibians share this habitat. Water levels and trail conditions may vary seasonally.

Festivals and When to Visit

The Romería de San Roque takes place on the last weekend in May. Its pilgrimage route follows the Camino de los Contrabandistas; decorated floats, horses and pilgrims travel through the municipality to the pilgrimage site. The Feria de Cala, in honour of the Virgen de Cala, begins on 7 September. Check the dates for the year of your trip. The Maratón BTT, a mountain biking event held in autumn, is described as a pioneering event in the region. Find out whether it takes place in your planned travel year.

The different themes offer different focal points: the church and hermitage represent architecture, the mines and railway mining and transport history, while the trails highlight hiking and landscape. If you plan to visit Cala for a particular festival or the Maratón BTT, plan around the relevant travel year and confirm the event dates.
