San Juan Del Puerto brings together a protected historic harbour landscape, architectural history, an extensive media archive and trails along the Tinto. When choosing a destination, it is worth considering these different highlights: local history, estuary landscape and routes that vary considerably in length and format.

Historic Harbour Landscape and Local Traditions

The area of the Lugares Colombinos has been designated by the Junta de Andalucía as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC), with the classification of a historic site. Its boundaries include San Juan Del Puerto and the marshland south of the town centre. This area corresponds to the historic harbour of the 15th and 16th centuries and the natural bay that sheltered it. Here, local history and landscape are part of the same historical context.

Present-day traditions also add a cultural highlight to the annual calendar. The Fiestas Falleras de San José bring together cultural, religious, musical and gastronomic events. Every year on 12 October, a gathering with cultural and sporting events takes place at the Muelle to mark the Columbian event. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with this date, check the event details in advance.

Church, Convent and Archive

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista is a late-Mudéjar church dating from 1500; it was later extended and remodelled in the Baroque style. The Convento del Carmen was founded in 1529 by Juana Lucero. Underground architectural elements and remains of the Baroque convent church have survived. The two buildings offer different insights into local architectural history: the parish church combines late-Mudéjar origins with later Baroque alterations, while the convent is distinguished by its surviving structural elements and church remains.

Another cultural highlight is the Archivo JesĂșs Quintero. It covers 2,000 square metres and preserves more than 10,000 hours of radio and television material, as well as 5,000 interviews. It also includes a library with more than 700 books. Local heritage therefore extends beyond historic buildings to include an extensive media and interview archive.

Estuary Landscape and Trails

The Área Natural y Recreativa Salinas y Muelle del Tinto is located in the Tinto estuary, in a habitat of this type that is rare in Andalusia. The Neo-Mudéjar Sevilla-Huelva railway station can also be seen in the vicinity of the natural area. Those interested in nature and industrial history can explore a range of themes in the landscape around the Tinto.

Length and route format are useful points of reference when comparing walking trails. The Salinas del Tinto trail is a 1.9-kilometre circular route of low difficulty. It has rest areas and sections suitable for people with reduced mobility. The Sendero del Muro y Compuertas is also designated as an easy circular route, but is 3.5 kilometres long. It is signposted and has information panels about cultural heritage, fauna, flora and local geology. A bridge crosses the first of three sluice gates in the flood protection wall.

Within the municipal area, the Puerta Verde San Juan-Niebla passes through the Arroyo Candón area, a gallery forest and by a historic Roman bridge. It follows an old drovers’ road and runs mostly parallel to the river through a distinctive natural landscape. As trail conditions can change with the seasons, it is worth checking the latest situation before setting off.

The VĂa Verde Los Molinos de Agua is considerably longer: this linear, paved route is 36 kilometres long and of low difficulty. It starts in San Juan Del Puerto and passes through Trigueros and Beas before reaching Valverde del Camino. By comparison, the two circular routes mentioned above have a different format and are considerably shorter.
