Corteconcepción is part of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park. The surrounding landscape includes dehesas and hills, forests of holm oaks, cork oaks and chestnut trees, as well as streams that converge in a nearby reservoir. When planning a stay, you can choose from different focuses: short hikes, longer routes, protected historic centres or nature watching.

Hiking routes for different timeframes

The direct Cascada de los Molinos route is about 3.8 kilometres long and takes approximately 60 minutes. Cascada de los Molinos is the municipality’s recommended hiking route and offers three options for experiencing nature and a variety of animal and plant species. Seasonal conditions on the route may vary.

Pueblo caminero has a similar time profile: the route is 3.83 kilometres long, takes 58 minutes and is classed as easy. It is considered a historic route connecting the nature and heritage of Corteconcepción. By comparison, La Fuente del Rey is significantly longer at 10.95 kilometres and 123 minutes; this historic hiking trail is also classed as easy. It leads from Corteconcepción to Aracena and back to Corteconcepción via the Sierra.

The Aracena–Corteconcepción route via El Rebollar starts in Corteconcepción on Calle Montesina. It is listed as a linear route covering 4.715 kilometres, is classed as easy and takes about two hours. El Rebollar starts at the Cuatro Caminos junction and can be walked in either direction. Mirador La Rejoya viewpoint is directly accessible via the public path connecting El Rebollar with Aracena. As trail and access conditions may change, it is advisable to check shortly before setting out.

Townscape and architecture

The historic centres of Corteconcepción and Puerto Gil are protected as Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) sites in the “Historic Ensemble” category. In Corteconcepción’s historic centre, irregular blocks of houses form a dense fabric; narrow, winding streets adapt to the topography. The townscape can also be understood as the result of adapting to the terrain.

The Parroquia de la Purísima Inmaculada Concepción is a three-nave basilica built in the 16th century in the Gothic-Mudéjar style. The façade of the Ermita de San Juan Bautista features a sebka diamond pattern dating back to the Almohad period. The chapel also houses an anonymous 18th-century polychrome sculpture of the Immaculate Conception.

The Plaza de Toros de Concepción is also adapted to the terrain. It is used during the Fiesta del Camino and for cultural events and sporting activities. The fiesta takes place on the Camino that connects the two districts, “Corte” and “Puerto”. It lasts five days and includes dancing as well as cultural and sporting activities. Check the dates and programme before your trip if you would like to plan your stay around it.

Nature watching and excursions into the countryside

The Área Recreativa del Embalse is located within the municipality of Corteconcepción. It is an ideal spot for family walks, nature watching and stargazing. There are several picnic areas with tables and benches along the reservoir. The Área Recreativa La Crucecita is about 300 metres from Corteconcepción, in the direction of the reservoir and Cañaveral de León. The site includes a play area, picnic facilities and parking; it also offers excellent views. Facilities may change, so check the latest information before visiting.

Mosto, events and regional food culture

Corteconcepción’s mosto tradition involves opening local wineries around the All Saints’ Day weekend so visitors can taste a drink made using traditional methods. Check the exact dates before your trip. The Jornadas Gastronómicas y Cinegéticas last a whole weekend and conclude with a national ham-carving competition; here too, it is worth confirming the event dates in advance.

The Ruta del Jabugo offers a guided gastronomic tour of the dehesa and a natural ham-curing facility at establishments in Corteconcepción, focusing on 100% acorn-fed Iberian ham. The tour presents a family tradition that dates back centuries. Check the details of the visits in advance.
