Zuheros combines a protected historic centre with prehistoric cave art, museums and trails through a karst landscape. Cheese and traditional crafts are also among the themes you can consider when planning your trip. First, decide whether you want to focus on history, nature or culinary discoveries.
History in the historic centre and at Castillo-Palacio
The defined historic centre of Zuheros is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Conjunto Histórico category. The history of Castillo-Palacio de Zuheros includes a tradition that should be treated with caution: its origins are linked to a settlement of the Muslim Banu Himsi in the 9th century in the area around the town. This refers to its association with that settlement; it is not the same as a confirmed claim that the castle was founded in that century.
The “Zuheros HistĂłrico” route by OleotourZuheros explores the history of the town and the SeñorĂo de Zuheros through its castle, towers, squares and flowerpots. You can also combine these themes with visits to local museums without turning them into a fixed sightseeing itinerary: each museum offers a different perspective on history and everyday life.
Cave art, geology and planning your visit
Cueva de los Murciélagos preserves prehistoric paintings from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It lies within the municipality of Zuheros and the Sierras Subbéticas Geopark. Inside are limestone formations, including “El Espárrago,” a four-metre-high stalagmite formation.
The tourist route covers 415 metres and 700 steps, reaching a depth of 65 metres. These figures give you concrete reference points for planning your day. Visits are available as part of a guided tour; access is limited, so you must book in advance.
OleotourZuheros offers another option: the company runs a private, guided AOVE olive oil tasting in the cave, followed by a private cave visit. This gives you two different ways to experience the cave and olive oil: a guided tourist visit and a private tasting followed by a visit.
Museums spanning archaeology and everyday history
The Museo Arqueológico Municipal displays archaeological remains from the 1991 and 1992 excavations at Cueva de los Murciélagos, as well as other finds from archaeological sites within the municipality of Zuheros. The focus here is on archaeological evidence and where it came from.
The Museo de Costumbres y Artes Populares “Juan Fernández Cruz” takes a different approach. Across 28 exhibition areas, it presents the economic and social way of life in Zuheros and its region from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Its collection includes more than 3,000 objects associated with the customs and traditions of Zuheros. When planning your museum visits, you can therefore choose between archaeological finds and insights into more recent everyday and social history.
Karst landscapes, waterfalls and activities
The Sendero del rĂo BailĂłn follows the BailĂłn River through the PoljĂ© de La Nava and reaches the Las Chorreras waterfalls during the rainy season. The waterfall section is therefore seasonal. The cave route and the trail also involve different kinds of planning: the cave requires a guided visit and advance booking, while the seasonal flow of water shapes the landscape along the trail.
For those interested in active sports, another option is at the Puente de Zuheros on the VĂa Verde de la SubbĂ©tica. It is one of two designated areas for these activities, which include climbing, abseiling and bungee jumping. Options range from a guided underground visit to a river landscape and sporting activities at the bridge.
Cheese, tastings and local crafts
Since 1995, QueserĂa Los Balanchares has been making artisan cheeses using traditional recipes. Visitors can choose from several guided cheese tastings, but must book in advance. At the end of September, the Feria Nacional del Queso Artesano is held at Paseo de la ConstituciĂłn, showcasing cheese and offering tastings.
MelenchĂłn is also part of the local cultural scene: this traditional carnival game is played in a circle in the street, where older residents sing satirical and love verses. Zuheros also has a workshop for sculptural works, using local olive, walnut and almond wood, among other materials. When planning your trip, you can explore these experiences alongside the cave, museums or landscape according to your interests, rather than trying to fit everything into a single itinerary.
