Espiel combines rocky terrain, Mediterranean forest, reservoirs and open landscapes in the Valle del Guadiato. Different interests can shape your trip: nature watching, striking monuments, local festival traditions or views of the night sky. The places and topics described offer different ways to explore these aspects, without any single focus defining the diversity of the town.

Landscape and Nature Watching

The Sendero del Calatraveño passes through Mediterranean forest typical of the Sierra Morena. Rockroses, cork oaks and reforested pines characterize the plant life along the trail. From the Antenas del Calatraveño, wide views open up over the Valle de los Pedroches and the Sierra Morena. Amphibians and breeding water birds can be observed in the area around the Molino de Los Pilones. Plants, landscape panoramas and wildlife watching stand side by side on this route, showing different aspects of the surrounding area.

Another route in Espiel leads to the Mirador de los Pinos. If you enjoy viewing landscapes from different vantage points, this named viewpoint complements the view from the Antenas del Calatraveño. Espiel’s landscape includes not only forest and rocky formations, but also reservoirs and open spaces.

Monuments and Historical Traces

The Ruinas visigodas del Cerro del Germo are also known as Cerro del Germo or El Germo. The monument is listed as a B.I.C. in the municipality of Espiel; the listing dates from June 3, 1931. At the Castillo de El Vacar in El Vacar (Espiel), the focus is on the preserved fortress. The castle is classified as defensive cultural heritage. What remains is an almost rectangular fortified area surrounded by thick walls. Its sides measure 65, 59.5, 50.1 and 49.5 meters. The complex includes four corner towers and four additional towers along each side.

The Puente Romano de Espiel also points to the town’s building history. According to available documentation, the structure visible today dates from 1731. There may have been an earlier bridge at this location, which could have been destroyed or severely damaged by flooding of the Guadiato River. The earlier bridge remains a possibility; the date refers to the structure visible today.

A route in Espiel explores the history of coal mining through five scenes. They highlight Espiel’s past as a mining area and a collective memory that can be recovered. This exploration of the town’s more recent history complements its monuments and buildings with a theme linked to Espiel’s mining past.

Romería, Climbing and the Night Sky

The Romería de la Virgen de la Estrella takes place on the night of the last Sunday in April. A procession with decorated floats and riders leads from the Paseo in Espiel to the hermitage, three kilometers away. After the offering and Mass, hornazo, a typical dish from Espiel, is served there. The festival date, procession and dish give the Romería its own cultural and culinary emphasis.

The climbing sector La V has routes up to 140 meters long. If you are interested in climbing, you’ll find a specific route length here. Espiel’s night sky is designated as a Starlight Reserve and is suitable for stargazing. You can prioritize nature and cultural themes according to your own interests: the Calatraveño offers forest, views and wildlife watching, while monuments, mining history and the Romería show other sides of Espiel.
