Alcaracejos brings together the Camino Mozárabe, church art, local traditions and a diverse landscape. The different themes offer various points of reference for planning: a stage of the Camino Mozárabe is specified by its length; architecture and performances offer an insight into the town’s cultural history, while the landscape mosaic provides opportunities for birdwatching. The conversion of a former grain silo is another special discovery.

Church Art and Traditional Houses

The Parroquia de San Andrés contains a preserved Gothic-Mudéjar portal from an earlier church building. It is a tangible testament to the older architectural history within today’s parish church. The Ermita de la Magdalena is located inside the municipal cemetery; a carved figure of Santa María Magdalena is kept there. The Ermita de San Sebastián, meanwhile, is next to a viewpoint overlooking Alcaracejos and its surroundings. These three places have different features: a portal in a church building, a religious carved figure and a view over the town and surrounding area.

Traditional houses also reveal a local feature: granite lintels define their façades. These house fronts also provide the backdrop for the Auto Sacramental de los Coloquios de la Infancia de Jesús. Organised by local residents, the theatrical performance tells of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. In this way, the houses’ architectural style and a local religious tradition come together, without reducing the performance to a single building.

The Camino Mozárabe and the Landscape

The Camino Mozárabe to Santiago de Compostela passes through the municipal areas of Villaharta, Pozoblanco, Espiel and Alcaracejos. The stage is 37 kilometres long. This length provides a concrete reference point for planning a hike, but in itself says nothing about walking time or difficulty. The Ruta Alcaracejos-Hinojosa del Duque offers a different point of reference: its starting point is in Plaza de los Pedroches in Alcaracejos. The two routes thus offer different planning information—the length of the stage on the Camino Mozárabe and a specified starting point for the Ruta.

The landscape of Alcaracejos Mozárabe includes Mediterranean woodland, Dehesa, mountain olive groves and areas interspersed with maquis. Between the Sierra and Alcaracejos, the diverse landscape mosaic offers opportunities for birdwatching. Nature lovers will therefore find a different focus here from that offered by religious buildings and traditions. Woodland, pastureland, olive groves and maquis do not describe a single type of landscape, but rather several elements of a varied area.

Festivals, Museums and Cuisine

In February, the annual Fiesta de la Matanza reenacts traditional slaughtering practices involving Iberian pigs. Visitors experience the individual stages of a traditional slaughter, accompanied by dances and regional folk traditions. The Museo de la Matanza complements this cultural experience with a permanent exhibition of old equipment associated with the culinary traditions of Los Pedroches. The festival and museum have different focuses: a demonstration accompanied by folk traditions in one case, and objects related to regional food culture in the other.

The local cuisine is also shaped by Iberian pork products. These form the main basis for cured meats such as chorizo, morcilla, lomo embuchado and morcón. Migas tostás is considered one of the emblematic dishes of shepherd country. Together with the exhibition at the Museo de la Matanza, this offers an insight into food culture encompassing traditional equipment as well as specific products and dishes.

A Grain Silo Turned Thermal Spa

The Centro Termal Los Pedroches is housed in a former grain silo from the 1960s, which was converted into a municipal thermal spa. This conversion gives the town another architectural landmark, this time from a more recent period. The silo complex includes swimming pools, baths, Turkish baths and saunas. As facilities may change, check what is currently on offer before your visit.
