Modernist Architecture and Historic Sites

Curved window openings, abundant floral decoration, stained glass and ornate ironwork define the modernist design of Casa Cardona. Its square floor plan surrounds an inner courtyard, with a semicircular structure attached at one corner. This rotunda contains covered viewing areas on two levels, with stained-glass windows. In 2004, Casa Cardona was listed as a monument in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage.

The Palacete Modernista de Fuente Obejuna is a monument worth visiting. The building houses a tourist office, a historical museum, an exhibition space and a conference room. The Palacete is also considered an outstanding work of Modernism in the province of CĂłrdoba and one of the most significant examples of Andalusian Modernism. Those interested in architecture will find a different focus here from the area's religious spaces and historic places of remembrance.

In the Iglesia del Antiguo Convento de San Francisco, the main altar's CamarĂn was created between 1765 and 1782; its rich decoration is in the Rococo style. Two other church buildings also bear distinct historical traces: the Ermita de Nuestro Padre JesĂşs Nazareno, formerly the Church of San Miguel, hosted meetings of the Concejo in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Ermita del Cristo de la Misericordia includes a section dating from the 15th or early 16th century.

The Ermita de Gracia is associated with pilgrimages and RomerĂas. The water from its spring is attributed with miraculous and healing properties.

Historical Memory and Archaeology

A 2019 decree designates the main sites of the events remembered in Fuenteovejuna as a Historic Site. Every two years, local residents stage a performance of “Fuenteovejuna”, reenacting the collective uprising against oppression. As the dates vary with each edition, check the performance dates for your planned travel period.

The Roman city of Mellaria is located in the area around Cerro del Masatrigo and the reservoir on the Arroyo de San Pedro stream, within the municipality of Fuente Obejuna. The surviving remains include fragments of walls, a representative building and a fragment of an aqueduct. Among the group of megalithic tombs, the Dolmen El Dorado is considered the best preserved to date. Together, these sites offer a view of different archaeological traces, although they do not represent the same period or the same type of remains.

Dehesa Landscapes and Hiking Routes

The landscape around Fuente Obejuna is shaped by the Dehesa: holm oaks and cork oaks stand alongside pastureland, rural paths and livestock farms. The PR-A 424 hiking trail passes through fields, olive groves and Dehesa pastures, as well as scrubland and Mediterranean mountain country. Traditional stone heaps known as Majanos can be found along the route. The trail thus connects several types of landscape; the Majanos provide an additional, distinctive sight along the way.

The “Tierras de Avutardas” ornithological circuit is about 30 kilometres long and designated for hiking and birdwatching. It runs near the hamlet of El Porvenir de la Industria; the walking time is estimated at eight hours. This makes the route a long hike in its own right. Trail conditions and signage can change, so check both before setting out. By contrast, the PR-A 424 focuses primarily on its changing scenery and the Majanos; the two routes therefore offer different reasons to get outdoors.

When it was inaugurated in 2020, the PR-A 424 “Circular de Ojuelo bajos y Ojuelos Altos” circular route was presented as starting in Ojuelos Altos and passing through El Alcornocal and Los Pánchez. For regional orientation, the N-432 connects Córdoba with Badajoz and is considered the region's main access road. From Córdoba, it heads north through Dehesas and mountain landscapes, including to Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, Belmez and Fuente Obejuna. Check road conditions separately.
