Fuente Palmera combines striking buildings around Plaza Real with an open-air museum dedicated to flamenco and trails through varied landscapes. This lets you choose whether to focus your stay on local history, cultural attractions or nature.

Plaza Real and the Architectural Heritage

Plaza Real is Fuente Palmera’s main square. It is home to the Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción, the Ayuntamiento and the Pósito. The Pósito is listed as a generally catalogued cultural asset in the Andalusian Historical Heritage Catalogue; its listing is based on an official order from 2016. Its Baroque portal is considered one of the most representative examples of civil architecture in the province of Córdoba. The building is dated to the period from 1767 to 1769; its exact year of construction is unknown.

At the Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción, the combination of several architectural features stands out: above the main entrance is the coat of arms of Carlos III, which points to the period when the church was founded. Two bell towers flank the building; a continuous balcony with a wrought-iron railing connects them. Colonial houses are also among Fuente Palmera’s notable cultural and monumental attractions.

Another testament to the town’s founding history is the restored historic Carolinian hydraulic complex, Conjunto Hidráulico Histórico. It preserves the historic public fountain, which is associated with the founding of La Colonia de Fuente Palmera in 1767. Nearby is Molino San Roque, a 19th-century mill. Its two large parallel towers are unusual in the area.

Flamenco and Event History

Parque del Flamenco is an open-air museum and interpretation centre that introduces visitors to singing, dance and toque (flamenco guitar playing). Visitors can scan QR codes to access recordings by artists and their biographies. Streets and avenues running through the park are also named after flamenco figures.

The Fuente Palmera de Boda fair is another part of the town’s event history. It began in 2005 and was held in October. Its programme included exhibitions from the wedding sector, fashion shows, training sessions, demonstrations and concerts. In 2017, the Certamen de Jóvenes Diseñadores de Fuente Palmera de Boda competition was added.

Trails, Agricultural Landscapes and Nature

The Ruta del Molino de San Roque runs along municipal roads between farms, through a patchwork agricultural landscape and towards the fertile floodplains of the Guadalquivir. The Rutas de las Fuentes Carolinas offer a different kind of scenery: they follow the Arroyo de La Plata Chica stream and pass a small elm-lined gallery woodland. The Rutas de las Fuentes Carolinas can be travelled on foot, on horseback, by bicycle or by car, and are extensively signposted with explanatory information boards.

You can reach the natural area of Paraje de Los Arroyones at kilometre 6 of the CP-187 road from Fuente Palmera to Posadas. It comprises holm oak stands, pines and the Arroyo de Los Picachos stream. The area is used for leisure and recreation, environmental education, school reforestation activities and sport. It also hosts the RomerĂa de San Isidro Labrador pilgrimage and the Fuente Palmera MTB Rally.

To reach the Ruta del Molino de San Roque from Córdoba, take the A-4, A-445 and A-440. The route’s starting sign is about 400 metres beyond the roundabout at the entrance to Fuente Palmera. Check the route locally before setting off.
