The Lipica Stud Farm is home to more than 300 Lipizzaners across an area of more than 300 hectares; its history dates back to 1580. The protected area includes the cultivated Karst landscape, the Lipizzaner herd, and architectural and art-historical heritage.

A ticket for the Lipica Riding School includes a 50-minute performance and a guided or self-guided visit to the stud farm. As program details may change, check the offer before your visit.

Caves and Trails in the Karst

Individual visits to Vilenica Cave are available from April 1 to October 31 on Sundays and public holidays at 3:00 p.m. Organized groups can visit the cave year-round by prior arrangement. A guided tour lasts approximately one hour and includes a total of 1,050 steps up and down. Check visiting times again before setting out.

Routes passing by the cave include the Lokev–Vilenica–Sežana hiking trail and a route to the Lipica border crossing into Italy. As trails may change locally, it is a good idea to check your route before setting out.

Two trails showcase different aspects of the landscape: Pot Srečka Kosovela runs at the foot of Tabor Hill, through vineyards, pine groves and Karst common land, to Tomaj. The Teran Circular Trail starts in the village center, in the square in front of Bunčetov Hof, and follows easy forest and village paths through the Karst landscape, with its vineyards and characteristic architecture. It may also include a visit to a winemaker with a Teran tasting, depending on local arrangements. The endpoint at Tomaj and the possibility of a tasting offer different points of reference when choosing a route.

The Karst Living Museum offers a broader view of this natural and cultural region: it extends across Sežana, Lipica and the area of the former Slovenian-Italian border. Covering more than 700 hectares, it showcases the natural and cultural heritage of the traditional Karst.

Literature, Remembrance and Architecture

The international Vilenica Literary Award is presented annually in the Plesna dvorana of Jama Vilenica. The venue is thus also associated with a recurring literary event.

The Srečko Kosovel Memorial Room has been located in Sežana’s old school since 1976, at the poet’s birthplace. Through stories, a film, exhibits and readings, it presents his life and literary work.

The Lokev Military Museum is located in the Tabor defensive tower. Built in 1487, the tower is designated a cultural monument of national importance.

The Botanični vrt Sežana by Villa Mirasasso offers a different architectural perspective: since 2017, the botanical garden has featured a revitalized area in the modernist style.
