Vremski Britof brings together distinctive church art, architectural history, rural heritage and trails through the countryside. The parish church, the Ravnikar shop and post office, the Žagar estate and the Reka gorge each offer a different perspective. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the exterior of the Ravnikar building, which can be viewed at any time, and activities that require prior arrangement.
Gothic choir and pilgrimage history
The parish church of the Assumption of Mary dates back to a 15th-century Gothic church; it was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 17th century. Its Gothic choir is decorated with frescoes from the second half of the 15th century, regarded as being of exceptional quality in Slovenia. The building thus brings together Gothic origins and a later Baroque remodelling. The church was also a pilgrimage church at a crossroads: one road led to the Brkini Hills, while another followed the Reka from the coast inland.
Architecture and stone heritage
The Ravnikar shop and post office was designed in 1978 in a former farmstead with an outbuilding and courtyard next to the village church. The project was Vojteh Ravnikar’s first major completed work. Its exterior can be viewed at any time; check local information about visiting before you go.
Another protected landmark is the former coachmen’s inn in Vremski Britof, protected as a monument for its outstanding stone-carving details. At the Dekleva House, the Makseln portal is a symbol of the family’s former prosperity. Together, these buildings add evidence of historic village life and design to the area’s religious and modern architectural history.
Mill, wine cellar and tastings
A renovated mill can be seen at the 400-year-old Žagar estate. For groups, tours of the sawmill and mill, as well as a multimedia presentation of the estate, can be arranged by prior agreement. The presentation takes place in a stone-vaulted wine cellar dating from 1588.
The Biščak family farm also offers organised visits: for groups, tastings and a tour of the farm and orchards can be arranged by prior agreement. Tastings are also available at the Morelj fruit farm; confirm your appointment before arriving. Thus, Biščak offers groups a farm and orchard tour, while Morelj offers tastings.
Walking and cycling routes with different points of interest
The Reka River gorge begins between Škoflje and Vremski Britof and is about three kilometres long. A well-maintained walking trail runs along the gorge. The Magajna Trail passes through Vremski Britof and is marked with a stylised portrait of Brkonja Čeljustnik, a literary character created by Magajna. The routes offer different points of interest: one follows the gorge, while the other features a literary motif on a trail through the village.
There are also various ways to explore the area by bike. The cycling loop around Vremščica passes through Matavun, Škoflje, Vremski Britof and Gornje Vreme. A ride through the Vremska Valley also offers the opportunity to discover Vremski Britof and its rich cultural heritage.
