Štorje offers several distinct points of interest for a culture-focused stay: the neoclassical Church of St John the Baptist, stoneworking in the Karst, and gin at Pr' Komarjevih. The subjects range from a specific architectural model in Trieste to a collection of tools and photographs, and a tasting that also introduces the production process and herbs.
Church and places of remembrance
The Church of St John the Baptist is designated a cultural monument of local significance. The present-day neoclassical building was erected on the site of an earlier church dating from the mid-17th century. Its model was the Church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo in Trieste. Thus, Štorje's older church site stands alongside an architectural connection to Trieste. The ruins of a former anti-Turkish camp are also located directly beside the church. The church and ruins represent distinct historical points of reference in close proximity.
Local commemorative traditions also have a specific focus: on Sunday, 18 January 2026, a traditional memorial ceremony was held in Štorje in honour of Partisan Marjan Štoka. Wreaths were laid at the Marjan Štoka monument and at the monument to the victims of violence and the fallen from the village and its surroundings. During the event, a hiking and running route led from Prosek via Repno, Voglje, Križ and Grahovo Brdo to Štorje.
Stoneworking at the Stone Gallery
At the Stone Gallery, Gabrijel Jeram presents a collection of stones and old stoneworking tools. It also includes photographs that tell the story of this craft in the Karst. The collection thus focuses on the worked materials, the tools and the historical context. With the curator's support, visitors can make their own stone souvenir, so a visit involves more than simply viewing the collection. The Stone Gallery is open by prior appointment only. Arrange a time before your visit.
Teran and gin at Pr' Komarjevih
Pr' Komarjevih is a small family business that has been operating since 1850 and focuses primarily on producing Teran. Its gin range includes Komarjev Gin A+, distilled in a 150-year-old still using the London Dry method. The basic gin tasting includes three different gin flavours and a homemade Karst snack. It also introduces the distillation process, different types of gin and their history, as well as the herbs of the Karst. The tasting thus combines information about the products with details about the ingredients and production. Tastings at Pr' Komarjevih are available by prior appointment only.
Nature trails on guided excursions
Guided excursions in Štorje have also included trails and nature education. In October 2024, participants explored a section of the Želodkova Forest Educational Trail; a circular educational trail around Štorje was also used. These examples offer a snapshot of how nature topics featured in guided excursions at that time. If a guided tour is important for your plans, check in advance whether one is available.
