Those wishing to combine nature and cultural history in Pliskovica can plan their stay around two distinct themes. The Pliskina pot offers a clearly defined circular trail: it is 6 km long and easy, with a walking time of 2 to 3 hours. Churches, village landmarks, and agricultural heritage also invite visitors to get to know the area from a cultural and historical perspective.
Karst Grassland and Circular Trail
Along the Pliskina pot, information boards explain the features of the Karst grassland and the birds that live there. They also cover the former uses and current significance of kali and lokve. So the route is about more than just the distance covered; it also explores the landscape and how it is used. Those who enjoy walking and want to learn about nature along the way will find a distinct focus here for planning their day.
Church, Linden Tree, and Village Square
The Baroque Church of St. Thomas stands at the highest point in Pliskovica. Its present-day choir was once part of the nave; the sacristy was formerly the Gothic choir. These former functions make the building’s history particularly tangible: spaces used differently today once belonged to other parts of the church.
In front of the church stands a linden tree considered a natural monument, estimated to be over 400 years old, and protected as a cultural monument. The church and tree thus bring together architectural and natural heritage. In the village square, the Latnik evropskega prijateljstva symbolizes friendship with the cross-border neighboring municipality of Zgonik and the 25 EU member states admitted when Slovenia joined the EU. The village well is also part of the local landscape: the well and its surroundings underwent extensive restoration in 2011.
Farm History and Crafts
The Slamčeva Domačija was converted into a youth hostel and includes a residential building and a barn. The barn was formerly used as a stable and for storing hay, agricultural produce, tools, and a cart. Its former functions show how closely the buildings were connected to everyday farming life.
A guided tour of the Slamič Domačija introduces visitors to Karst architecture and details of traditional rural life. The Festival kamna includes practical stoneworking workshops. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates and program in advance. For organized groups of more than ten people, a guided ascent of Volnik can also be arranged through the local visitor service. Make arrangements before your visit.
Bees, Wine, and Local Insights
Čebelarstvo Petelin – Irma Petelin has been welcoming visitors for years and sharing information about the lives of bees, beekeepers’ work, beekeeping methods, queen bee breeding, honey production, and other bee products. A visit may include tasting different varieties of Kraški med, a demonstration of honey extraction, and a tour of the beekeeping facilities. Arrange your visit in advance. The address is Pliskovica 102, 6221 Dutovlje.
Pliskovica also offers wine and Teran liqueur for sale and tasting, as well as an ethnological collection. Advance registration is recommended. Together with the themes of the Karst, church architecture, and agricultural heritage, these opportunities provide different ways to experience a stay: from a hike lasting several hours to insights into crafts, agriculture, and local products.
