Trails Between Karst and Railway Relics
The “Along the former railway track” route runs from Kozina to Trieste and in the opposite direction. It is an easy hiking and cycling route through the Karst landscape. Several former railway stations and facilities have been preserved along the old railway line, including tunnels cut into the rock. The route is considered a unique industrial heritage monument. This means the tour combines an easy activity with a specific historical theme.
“On the flysch and limestone” offers a different route choice: the trail starts near Kozina and returns to Kozina. It is suitable for trekking and mountain biking. Unlike the easy hiking and cycling tour along the former railway line, this route is primarily suited to trekking and mountain biking.
For a loop with a stated duration, consider the easy Beka–Botač–Beka route in Beka Landscape Park; it takes about two to three hours. Another trail description is for the Markovska pastirska pot: it starts at a new roundabout by the bunker, passes the rocks, Bezljak, and Bičun, and returns to the roundabout. The trail has benches, marked rocks, railings, and a small bridge; facilities may change.
The Friendship Trail connects Bagnoli della Rosandra (Boljunec), Botač, Beka, and Ocizla. In the Glinščica Valley area, it follows a historic salt-trading route used by merchants from Carniola for many centuries. This trail therefore combines a connection between several places with the history of a trade route.
Kozina also has a listed station for the automatic e-bike rental system. A report from 2024 names the town as a location; check whether the station is available before your trip.
Settlement History and Church Architecture
Ajdovščina nad Rodikom is a prehistoric and ancient settlement on a prominent hill above Rodik. It was inhabited in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The path to the fortification starts in Rodik and heads towards Artviže, reaching the prehistoric site. This makes it possible to consider the historic site and the described route to it together.
The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Klanec also offers a specific date: it was built in several phases between 1659 and 1670. The presbytery dates from 1659, and the nave from 1670. A mighty linden tree also grows at the church site and has stood there for several centuries.
