Podnart brings together a distinctive river landscape and a well-documented building history. The Lipnica flows into the Sava at Podnart; the preserved buildings at the railway station provide a unique point of connection to the town’s history. When planning your trip, you can consider the natural surroundings and the town’s architectural history as separate areas of interest.

Landscape and routes in the Lipnica Valley

The Lipnica Valley extends to Podnart and is designated as a protected area of cultural heritage in the open landscape in the surrounding region. Around the town, there are opportunities for peaceful walks in nature and cycling routes with climbs to Jelovica. The river’s confluence is a precise local landmark, while the protected area, walks, and cycling routes concern the wider valley. Near Podnart, the Lipnica Castle Natural Science Trail connects the Lipnica Valley with Radovljica. Check route conditions before setting out on a planned excursion.

Railway station and architectural history

Podnart railway station lies north of the bridge over the Sava, on the road from Kranj to Kropa. When rail replacement services are operating, the Podnart stop is next to the railway station. As arrangements for replacement buses may change, check the latest information from Slovenske železnice before travelling.

The masonry railway station building dates from 1870. The station complex also includes a masonry water tower and a preserved residential building for unmarried railway workers. Together, these buildings illustrate different aspects of the railway site: the station building, technical infrastructure, and housing for employees. The residential building in particular brings the social side of railway history to life, as its function was specifically intended for unmarried railway workers.

Hiša Podnart 26 offers another perspective on the town’s architectural history. The house was built in 1928 as an inn with an agricultural outbuilding and is a monument of local importance. Compared with the station complex, it presents different original functions side by side: an inn and agricultural outbuilding on one hand, and a station building and housing for railway workers on the other. The years 1870 and 1928 place these buildings at distinct points in the town’s history.

Local history and culture

The local holiday is observed on 19 October and commemorates the birthday of Josip Pogačnik, who was from Podnart and was president of the first Slovenian national government. Local remembrance thus links a specific date on the calendar with a person from the town and his public role. Alongside the buildings, this adds a biographical perspective on Podnart’s history.

The improvisational theatre performance “Smešn´ga pa zdrav´ga” by KUD KIKS was staged at Kulturni dom Podnart on 11 January 2025. On 22 March 2025, the concert “Vrača se pomlad” by the groups Orion and Artistik took place there.
