Studor v Bohinju is a compact settlement at the foot of the 1,002-metre-high Mount Studor in the upper Bohinj Valley. The covered double hayracks between the village and the fields are especially characteristic. The village is also home to Alpine houses, Oplen House, a cave of national importance and the Bohinj section of the Juliana Trail. You can get to know the place from different perspectives: through its architectural heritage, its long history of settlement or activities in the surrounding landscape.

A Village Between the Mountain and the Fields

From Studor, you can see Lake Bohinj and the upper Bohinj Valley. The compact settlement lies at the foot of the mountain of the same name; the fields and hayracks are also part of the village landscape. This makes Studor interesting if you want to take in not only individual sights, but also the connection between the village, the mountain and its agricultural surroundings.

Toplarji and Bohinj’s Architectural Heritage

The group of hayracks consists of covered double hayracks, known as Toplarji. They were built between the village and the fields. Traditionally, the hayracks were used to dry hay and other crops, as well as to store tools and vehicles. Their double, covered form is therefore rooted in a specific agricultural use and is more than a decorative feature in the landscape. The group below Studor v Bohinju is cultural heritage within Triglav National Park.

The houses also shape the character of the village: most are built in the Alpine style, with two storeys and galleries. Architectural details include rustic Baroque and Neoclassical decorations; some Bohinj black kitchens have also been preserved. Anyone interested in regional architectural styles will find a variety of examples here within a compact village setting, rather than at a single, isolated attraction.

Oplen House and Local History

Oplen House is a Bohinj-style farmhouse with a long, narrow layout. Its living and working areas are under one shared roof. The house opened to the public in 1991. One of its distinctive features is a black kitchen, where a fire can still be lit in the hearth. Visitor arrangements may vary; check in advance if you are planning a visit.

The village’s history goes back a long way: archaeological finds indicate that Studor has been inhabited for at least 2,500 years. Two cremation graves were discovered during archaeological inspections. Another local tradition is Otepanje, which takes place in Studor on St Stephen’s Day, 26 December. One participant carries a sack of sausages and another a bottle of schnapps.

Landscape and Cave

Jama pod Studorjem is a natural feature of national importance. It is classified as an inclined cave with a shaft and levels. It adds a geological aspect to the village’s cultural heritage. The cave is a distinct feature in the landscape and should not be confused with the route of the Juliana Trail.

Hiking, Cycling and Horse Riding

The Bohinj section of the Juliana Trail runs from Srednja Vas via Studor to Stara Fužina. Along this section, the route follows well-marked trails, forest roads and mountain paths; for the most part, it is easy to navigate. This gives you a specific route connecting several villages, rather than just a circular walk around Studor.

Another option is the e-bike tour through the Voje Valley. Its circular route passes through traditional villages in the upper and lower Bohinj valleys, including Studor. This makes the tour different from the Juliana Trail stage: the focus here is on a circular ride through the villages. Tour details may change; check the latest information when planning your ride.

Below Studor, Ranč Mrcina offers horseback riding in the countryside and carriage rides. Availability may vary by season, so ask in advance about what is on offer. Beginners and experienced riders alike are invited to join a ride to nearby Senožeta Hill. Together with the hiking trail and e-bike loop, these options give you a choice of hiking, cycling and horse riding, without combining them into a single route.
