Nova Gorica offers a concrete starting point when choosing where to stay: at Trg Evrope, the border runs right through a square, while museums explore border changes from different perspectives. There is also the cultural heritage of Kostanjevica and nature in Panovec and Rafut. If you’re looking for hotels in Nova Gorica, you can first consider whether border history, art, monastic heritage or nature should shape your stay.
A Square in Two Countries
Trg Evrope is a cross-border square: one half is in Slovenia and the other in Italy. The well-known mosaic remains at its centre. For travellers interested in borders and their significance, the division here is part of the square’s actual setting. The square serves a variety of purposes and has lighting, a fountain and connections for events; specific event arrangements may change.
Museums Tell the Story of the Border
The permanent exhibition “Mesto na meji” is located on the ground floor of the northern building at EPICenter, Kolodvorska pot 10. It explores the cross-border region, focusing on the personal stories of the people who live there. In this way, it looks not only at border changes but also at their human dimension. EPICenter also has a modern conference hall with nearly 200 seats and the EPIC Café, which offers visitors a place to relax and spend time together. The specific facilities may change.
Another perspective is offered by the Kolodvor Museum Collection at Nova Gorica railway station, the city’s oldest public building. Its exhibition documents the human impact of border changes in the Goriška region. In Pristava, the exhibition “Na šverc!” explores the history of smuggling in the area after the Second World War. It is housed in the rooms of a former small border crossing. The exhibition also includes an escape room that presents the subject in a playful way.
Art and Performing Arts
Mestna galerija Nova Gorica is regarded as a recognised centre for contemporary visual art in Slovenia. Its programme includes lectures on contemporary visual art practices, art workshops for children of different age groups, and public exhibition tours. If a particular offering is important to your trip, check the event dates in advance.
The Slovenian National Theatre Nova Gorica also continues a long institutional history: its performance archive dates back to 1955. If you’re planning to attend a performance, check the current schedule.
Kostanjevica: Cultural Heritage, Library and Rose Collection
The entire Kostanjevica site, including its church, monastery, library and crypt, has been protected as a cultural and artistic monument since 1985 and is part of Slovenia’s protected cultural heritage. In 2024, the Franciscan Monastery of Kostanjevica in Nova Gorica was declared a cultural monument of national importance. Expert presentations for visitors and the general public are regularly held at the monastery.
Charles X and five other members of the Bourbon family are buried in the crypt. The Škrabec Library holds more than 16,500 books, including 32 incunabula. The Bourbon Rose Collection offers a different highlight: it is one of the world’s most complete and largest collections of old Bourbon roses. Together, these places reveal different aspects of cultural heritage—from Bourbon history to book collections and garden culture.
Nature in Panovec and Rafut
The Panovec Forest Nature Trail has 35 educational stops, 20 of them along the shorter route. This option is also suitable for people with reduced mobility. Panovec Forest is also home to the legally protected Italian Agile Frog, known there as “laška žaba”. The trail therefore focuses both on sharing knowledge and on a specific protected animal species.
Rafut Park is considered a unique natural and cultural heritage site in Slovenia and Europe. It contains a large collection of exotic plants that thrive particularly well in Nova Gorica. From Nova Gorica, the park can be reached by pedestrians and cyclists via a path along the railway line. Check route information before planning your visit, as it may change.
