Hiking, cycling and horse riding

A 5.2 km section of the Walk of Peace hiking trail leads from Opatje selo via Nova vas, Županov vrh and Kremenjak to Sela Na Krasu. The route is part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic. The 5.2 km refers to the section to the village, not the length of the entire long-distance trail. If you are planning a hike with a specific destination in Sela Na Krasu, this stage gives you a clear direction.

Another option is the 25 km circular horse-riding route, which passes through Sela Na Krasu. From here, the riding trail runs north along the route of the former military railway. Compared with the hiking stage, both the activity and the stated distance are different. If you plan to go horse riding, check the arrangements locally.

A well-maintained gravel path for cyclists and hikers leads to Županov vrh and an 8-metre-high brick border watchtower of the former Yugoslav army. Access conditions may change; check them before setting out. This makes the path a distinct option alongside the hiking stage and the circular route, without confusing the different distances.

Viewpoint and activities in the village

A forest path leads to the Vodarna Sela na Krasu viewpoint. From there, you can see Trstelj, Kostanjevica, Temnica and the Cerje monument. There is a paragliding launch site right next to the viewpoint. Launches depend on the weather and local operating conditions; if you plan this activity, check the conditions in advance.

The sports park also offers various ways to get active: football, basketball and bocce. There is a playground for children. The park offers a different way to spend time in the village than the hiking and cycling trails or the viewpoint. You can choose which of these activities suits your stay based on your own interests.

Village square and local history

The village square is home to the Church of the Assumption of Mary (“Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja”) and a memorial to Filip Peric, a Slovenian professor and journalist. The church was first mentioned in 1753. The old school building in Sela Na Krasu was built in 1894. Together, these places offer specific insights into local history, and there is no set order in which to visit them.

The former prehistoric hillfort of Gradišče Podgrac is also part of the village’s history. Based on ceramic finds, it is dated to the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Today, only the ruins of the former wall that surrounded the hillfort are visible on the site; visibility of the remains may vary depending on the terrain. This makes the site different from the buildings on the village square: it is an archaeological site, with only limited remains visible.

Osmica and motorhome stopover

Osmica Pri Krčarju at Sela na Krasu 3, 5296 Kostanjevica na Krasu, opens twice a year. It serves cured meat products and homemade wine. Check the exact opening dates before travelling so that you can plan your visit around its seasonal opening.

For motorhome travellers, there is the PZA Sela na Krasu motorhome stopover on the outskirts of the village. It has 14 motorhome pitches and offers a view of the Adriatic. Check the facility information again before you arrive. This means that, alongside the seasonally open place to eat, you also have specific information about a motorhome stopover to help plan your overnight stay.
