Stone paths on the slope below Čaven, views across the Vipava Valley and the pilgrimage Church of St. Mary give Vitovlje concrete starting points for hiking and cultural experiences. There is also a memorial room dedicated to local sculptor and woodcarver Stanko Hrovatin, as well as the annual Chestnut Festival. When planning your trip, you can weigh up hiking trails, local cultural heritage and recurring event dates.

Hiking and Landscape

The Vitovska Circular Trail starts at the car park beside the event venue in Vitovlje. It follows stone paths on the slope below Čaven and offers views across the Vipava Valley. At 929 metres, Kopitnik is the highest point on the route; there, you can watch hang gliders and paragliders in flight. The trail also includes a historic section: the Napoleonic Road on the Vitovska Circular Trail was built during the Illyrian Provinces.

The annual hiking day on the Vitovska Circular Trail takes place in November. It starts at the event venue in Vitovlje, lasts about four hours and is followed by a social gathering. This duration refers to the hiking day. If you choose this event for your trip, check the exact date in advance.

The themed hike “Od Lijaka do Sekulaka” passes through Vitovlje. The footpath of the same name runs past springs, vineyards, cultivated fields and chestnut groves. The circular trail to the Church of St. Mary is also a nature trail with information boards. This means there are several themes to choose from for a hike: valley views and a named high point, a cultural landscape, or a circular trail with information about nature.

Lake Vitovsko is the only natural lake in the Vipava Valley. It is 7 metres wide, 10 metres long and up to 1 metre deep.

Cultural Heritage and Local Traditions

The Church of St. Mary was built in the 14th century on a rocky outcrop above the village. The old pilgrimage church also served as an anti-Ottoman refuge. The circular trail to the church is designed as a nature trail with information boards.

You can visit the memorial room dedicated to local sculptor and woodcarver Stanko Hrovatin in one of Vitovlje’s hamlets. Hrovatin devoted much of his life to working with wood and stone. Check the visiting arrangements locally.

For many years, the Vitovlje Cultural and Tourism Association has organised a torchlight procession at the end of the year. It starts at the event venue in the hamlet of Užiče and goes to the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Vitovlje.

The Chestnut Festival and When to Visit

The Chestnut Festival in Vitovlje takes place every year on the third weekend in October. First organised as a one-day event in 1997, it was later extended to two days. Vitovlje is home to the indigenous Vitovski maron chestnut variety. The festival offers raw and roasted chestnuts, as well as chestnut dishes. Other attractions include local handicraft stalls, exhibitions, children’s entertainment and music; the specific offerings may vary from year to year. Check the programme for the year of your visit.

There are different options when choosing when to visit: in October, the Chestnut Festival celebrates the region’s chestnut traditions, while in November the Vitovska Circular Trail hosts a hiking day lasting about four hours. Plan your trip around whichever of these themes interests you most, and check the event dates against your travel dates.
