Branik offers a clear selection of themes for a stay: the village is home to the Gothic Church of St. Ulrich, while Rihemberk Castle is associated with its history, the Natura 2000 Infoteka and several trail options. For planning, it helps to distinguish between church architecture, the castle theme and the different routes. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to your interests, with a greater focus on architectural history, nature interpretation or a longer tour.
Rihemberk Castle: History and Nature
Rihemberk Castle has been designated a cultural monument of national importance since 1999. The grounds also contain traces of a prehistoric fortification. Prehistoric remains are therefore also part of the castle’s historical picture. At the castle, the Natura 2000 Infoteka presents both the history of the site and its natural heritage. Its focus is on riparian habitats in the Branica and Vipava valleys, where numerous rare and endangered species occur. Visitors interested in cultural history will also find a specific way to learn about the region’s habitats here.
Visitors can climb Slovenia’s tallest castle tower; access may vary by season. Before your visit, check whether the climb is possible on your chosen date. This lets you plan the tower as a separate activity.
St. Ulrich and the Freestanding Bell Tower
The Gothic Church of St. Ulrich in Branik is mentioned as early as around 1200. In front of its entrance stands a freestanding 16th-century bell tower with a Baroque cupola. The church and tower offer two distinct architectural features: the tower stands separately in front of the entrance rather than forming part of the church façade. Its Baroque cupola adds another architectural detail to the view of the Gothic church. Visitors interested in historic architecture will find a different theme here than at the castle grounds: the focus is on the church, the tower and their respective architectural styles.
Circular Walk, Cycling Route and Educational Trail
The “Rihemberška grajska pot” starts at the cultural centre in Branik, where there is a car park, and is a circular walk from Branik to Rihemberk Castle. Check the current parking situation at the cultural centre before setting out. Another option is a cycling route from the medieval Rihemberk Castle to Nova Gorica. The routes differ in their layout and destinations: one is a circular walk from Branik to the castle; the other is a cycling connection from the castle to Nova Gorica.
Branik is also home to the “Od kala do vodnjaka” educational trail. It is approximately 14.4 km long. This approximate distance provides a specific guide for planning your day; if you include the trail, set aside a dedicated time for it in your itinerary.
The Two Castles Trail and Its Historical Context
The Two Castles Trail connects Rihemberk Castle with the present-day hamlet of Tabor in the Vipava Valley. The now-vanished Dornberg Castle once stood at the site of Tabor. The trail therefore does not refer to two surviving castles: one reference point is Rihemberk, while the other is the present-day settlement at the site of the former structure. This distinction explains what the name “Two Castles Trail” refers to and makes the route a distinct way to explore the history of castles in the region.
