Lokve lies at an altitude of 965 m in a valley surrounded by forest. The ski area is right next to the village; the ski slope is on the sunny southern side, at the same altitude as the village, with a vertical drop of 100 m. In Lokve, the valley and forest setting meets a south-facing winter slope—a distinctive feature to consider when choosing activities.

Winter Activities and Hiking Trails

The ski area is ideal for beginners. Winter activities include a free sledding run and groomed cross-country ski trails for young people and adults. Winter facilities may vary from season to season. Before your trip, check which activities are available during the season in question.

For a walk around the village, the easy “Pot za zidom” trail runs mostly through beech forest. It is 7 km long and takes about 2.5 hours. Another option is the “Lokve – Poldanovec – Lokve” trail: it is 7 to 7.5 km long, with a stated duration of 2 to 2.5 hours. It reaches an altitude of 1,299 m. The estimated times are therefore similar, and the distances differ only slightly. The descriptions emphasize different aspects: one trail loops around Lokve and passes through beech forest, while the other features Poldanovec and the elevation reached in its name and route details.

Cyclists also have their own route option: “Pod vrhovi Trnovske planote” starts in Lokve and follows forest gravel roads beneath the main peaks of the Trnovska planota. These include Poldanovec, Ojstrovica, Mali Golak and Nagnovec. The route is suitable for families and recreational cyclists; conditions may vary by season. This lets you plan your stay around either hiking or a bike ride, while keeping the different route descriptions distinct.

Glassmaking Tradition and Culture in the Village

Forest glassmaking is represented at several locations in Lokve. The Lokve section of the exhibition can be seen at the school, in the premises of KS Lokve-Lazna, at Gostilna Lokve and at Gasthaus Winkler. The exhibition displays may change. At Gostilna Lokve and Gasthaus Winkler, you can also try the glassmakers’ dessert. Tasting may depend on arrangements with the individual establishments; check in advance if you would like to include it in your plans.

The annual “Wood & Stone Lokve” sculpture colonies create a Forma viva in public spaces. A small museum is dedicated to cooperage; visits are possible by prior arrangement. The Church of Sv. Antona Padovanskega is another local attraction. These different places bring together exhibitions, crafts, sculpture and religious architecture, without requiring any one activity to be the main focus.

A memorial plaque in the former primary school building commemorates 38 fallen NOV fighters and victims of fascist violence from Lokve and Lazna. Another distinctive feature of the village is Goveji kal. A wall is also part of the historic landscape: it was built along the boundary between private and state-owned land, using stones cleared to make meadows. These details add the history of the place to its trails and cultural sites.
