An unusually specific way to discover Ljutomer is through a monument in Park generala Maistra. It depicts Rudolf Maister as a cultural figure, poet and bibliophile—a portrayal found at no other monument in Slovenia. This combination of three roles gives the memorial site a distinctive character. Film history, horse breeding and crafts passed down through generations offer further perspectives on Ljutomer and its surroundings.
Film, Horses and Local History
The Ljutomer Museum introduces Karol Grossmann, who filmed the first Slovenian film, “Odhod od maše,” in Ljutomer in 1905. Three permanent collections tell stories of the town’s past and its surroundings through accounts, objects and memories. The film’s title and year provide a specific historical reference point for its film history; the collections broaden the view to include the town and surrounding area.
Horse breeding also shapes the region’s history: the first Slovenian trotting races took place in the area around Ljutomer in 1874, and the region is considered the cradle of Slovenian horse breeding. Sunday trotting races at the Ljutomer Hippodrome are among the area’s important local traditions. If you would like to attend a race, check the dates before your trip.
Routes with Different Highlights
The Vinska kolesarska pot is 16.3 kilometres long and starts at Glavni trg. The 15.5-kilometre Vardova pot is a circular cycling route: it passes through Ljutomer, goes by the former Vardov grad to the Ljutomer ponds, and then returns to Ljutomer. The routes are similar in length; their described itineraries are a more useful basis for choosing than the small difference in distance.
The two shorter routes can also be easily distinguished by their stated features. The Jeruzalemska vinska pot is a 7.9-kilometre walking route through terraced vineyards. The 8.1-kilometre Grossmannova pohodna pot is a circular route through Mala Nedelja that passes the Grossmannova domaÄŤija. The focus here is on vineyard scenery and a circular route associated with a particular place and farmstead. Check the conditions of the Jeruzalemska vinska pot, Vardova pot and Grossmannova pohodna pot before setting out.
The Pot razgledov features a natural spring and a vineyard well at RinÄŤetova graba. These two landmarks show how different water sources can appear side by side in a route description. A section of the Slovenian-Croatian branch of the Prekmursko-Ĺ tajerska section of the Way of St. James also passes through the Municipality of Ljutomer. The route options therefore range from cycling and walking paths to a section of the Way of St. James.
Crafts and Rural Life
At Lončarstvo Žuman, the pottery craft has been passed down through five generations since 1874. The business includes a small museum displaying items made by five generations of the family. The craft tradition and the collection offer two different perspectives on the same family heritage: the passing down of skills and the products handed down through the generations. Advance enquiries may be required for larger groups.
The Pristava Winegrowing and Farming Museum showcases more than 300 years of the Pavličič family’s farming and winegrowing life. Its expanded programme includes a traditional farm snack with wine from the family’s own cellar, available by prior reservation. The family history and a culinary experience that must be planned in advance are both part of a visit to this museum.
A 1,345-hectare landscape park encompasses not only the Jeruzalem Hills but also six ponds in the village of Podgradje near Ljutomer. This combination of hills and ponds adds a distinct landscape element to the routes and cultural sites.
