An octagonal beehive, a mill on the Mura River that is still in operation, and routes ranging from 2.5 to 125 kilometres illustrate the range of discoveries in Veržej. When planning, you can weigh up cultural sites and routes that vary greatly in scale.
Bee Museum and Crafts in Veržej
The beehive at the Čebelarstvo Tigeli Bee Museum is octagonal and built to a pavilion design. At the museum, you can see honey extractors, smokers and wax presses; the collection also includes a log hive that is more than 300 years old. A beehive from the late 19th century has been preserved with its equipment and represents an exceptionally rich cultural heritage. Čebelarstvo Tigeli offers tours of the museum and its herb gardens.
The DUO Crafts Centre has a different focus. It comprises a pottery workshop, an exhibition and sales gallery, an ecomuseum and the Puščenjak Hall for exhibitions. Through various workshops and research camps, the centre passes on knowledge of eastern Slovenia’s craft heritage to younger generations. Veržej thus showcases beekeeping and crafts through their own distinct forms of exhibition and interpretation.
Babičev mlin on the Mura River
Babičev mlin is the only surviving mill still in operation on the right bank of the Mura River in Veržej. Its wooden waterwheel, mounted outside the mill, rests on two boats—a striking structure that differs from a conventional mill wheel. The mill is designated a technical and cultural monument.
The mill offers various types of flour: white, rye, bread, buckwheat and maize flour. Its continued operation, unusual wheel construction and range of products make the mill a destination in its own right when visiting Veržej.
Church and Local History
The Church of St Michael the Archangel is an example of fine Baroque architecture in the heart of the market town. It was first mentioned in 1545 as a filial church of Križevci; its high altar dates from the second quarter of the 18th century. These two dates offer different insights: the first refers to an early mention of the church, while the second relates to a specific furnishing.
Memorial sites also form part of the town’s cultural landscape. Slavko Osterc Memorial Park features a bust of the composer and a memorial room. The memorial to Dr Fran Kovačič also includes a memorial room and a bust. Two recurring events are associated with Veržej: the Kovačičevi spominski večeri have been held every March since 1997, and the Osterčev spominski dan has taken place on the last Saturday in May since 1963. If you are travelling specifically for one of these events, check the dates in advance.
Routes along the Mura River and through the floodplains
The Murska kolesarska pot – desni breg is an easy cycling route through the flat landscape along the Mura River to Veržej. The entire route is 125 kilometres long and can be started or left at any section. The 17.5-kilometre Plavčkova TURA follows a different format: it is a circular route for walkers and cyclists. At 2.5 kilometres, the marked Mrtvice reke Mure forest nature trail is considerably shorter and runs alongside an oxbow lake of the Mura River.
The three routes differ in length, format and theme. The Murska kolesarska pot is a cycling route through the flat landscape to Veržej, while the circular Plavčkova TURA can be explored on foot or by bike. As you walk and take in the surroundings, the nature trail introduces the ecology of the floodplain landscape, its plant and animal species, and the lives of people along the Mura River.
Spring and the white daffodil
The protected white daffodil grows at three municipal sites in Veržej. You can see it in the meadows of Veržej each spring. Spring is therefore the right season for this nature-watching experience; the routes and cultural sites offer other things to explore during a stay.
