Maribor can be explored through its wine, art, city history and landscape. A tasting at the Oldest Vine House, the museums’ collections and exhibitions, and a walk through the city park and up several hills reveal different sides of the city. In Pohorje, you can also go hiking, cycling, horse riding and skiing. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first asking whether you would like to focus mainly on cultural discoveries, outdoor activities, or both.

Wine, art and city history

At the Oldest Vine House, you can taste wines from Štajerska produced by 55 local winemakers. They are served with a local snack of homemade bread, pumpkin seed oil and salt. This pairs the wine tasting with a specific selection of regional products. The Oldest Vine Museum, by contrast, is dedicated to the heritage of the 450-year-old Modra kavčina grape variety. A visit to the museum includes a tasting of Queen’s wine or fruit juice. Together, the House and Museum offer two thematic approaches to wine: a selection of local winemakers’ wines served with a snack, and the history of a particular grape variety with its own tasting. If a particular tasting is important to your visit, check the current offerings in advance.

The National Liberation Museum Maribor presents a permanent exhibition on the city’s history in the 20th century and offers history workshops for children and young people. Specific workshop dates may vary. Alongside wine and art, the city’s more recent history is also in focus; the workshops complement the exhibition with an educational offering for young visitors.

The Maribor Art Gallery preserves more than 10,000 works of art representing Slovenian visual art. It also holds Slovenia’s only independent collection of Slovenian video art. The art collection and video art thus offer distinct points of focus. Maribor Synagogue is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Central Europe. Sinagoga Maribor is dedicated to researching, preserving, caring for and presenting Jewish cultural heritage. Together, these themes offer different ways to explore Maribor’s cultural history.

The Maribor Regional Museum’s “Variations – Hommage to Franz Liszt” program offers another connection between music and cultural heritage. It enables young musicians from Maribor and their teachers to perform in the Knights’ Hall at Maribor Castle. The program has run continuously since 2016; performances take place every year in April, May and June, and sometimes during the autumn months. If you would like to plan a concert into your trip, check the specific dates.

City park, hills and Pohorje

Lent is Maribor’s oldest and most picturesque district. The city park and its surrounding area are protected as a monument of designed nature. The Piramida–Kalvarija nature trail starts in the Old Town, runs through the city park to the hills of Piramida, Mestni vrh and Kalvarija, and is approximately five kilometres long. The route described thus connects the Old Town, the park and three named hills in a single outing.

Kalvarija is a 375-metre-high hill above Maribor, characterised by its vineyards; the climb involves 454 steps. The trail and climb figures refer to different measures: approximately five kilometres describes the length of the trail, while the steps refer to the ascent of Kalvarija.

Pohorje also offers several outdoor activities: hiking, cycling, horse riding and skiing. Seasonal availability may vary. Connecting the city with Maribor Pohorje, the lower station of the Pohorska VzpenjaÄŤa is five kilometres from the city centre. Check operating hours before planning your visit.

On a trip to Maribor, you can choose between very different focuses: tastings and cultural history in the city, a protected park with a trail to several hills, or activities in Pohorje. Which of these sides you give more weight to will give your trip its own character.
