The old village centre of Gradišče lies at the southern foot of Brzek Hill. The Svarunova pot circular trail also passes through the village. This brings together two different interests for your trip: a longer circular hike and cultural and historical attractions ranging from a prehistoric archaeological site to a church and chapel. When choosing Gradišče as your destination, you can first decide whether to focus on the trail or the village’s history.

Hiking the Svarunova pot

Svarunova pot is a 23-kilometre circular trail that takes about five hours. Both figures refer to the full loop and give you a specific timeframe for planning your day. The trail passes through Gradišče. Along the route, 33 interpretive panels and information points provide details about natural, cultural and historical attractions. When assessing the hike, therefore, consider both the timeframe and the range of topics covered along the way.

You can return from Gradišče by bus. If you plan to use this option, check the timetable before your trip. The organised hiking day on the Svarunova pot traditionally takes place on Slovenian Statehood Day, 25 June. Confirm the date of the event in advance.

Archaeological heritage

The Gradišče archaeological site is a large prehistoric hillfort with defensive ramparts, ditches and terraces. The site has two associated burial grounds. The tumulus cemetery comprises approximately 40 burial mounds; this figure refers to this cemetery, not to both burial grounds combined. Ramparts, ditches and terraces are distinct features of the prehistoric settlement, while the burial grounds add the perspective of the associated burial sites. The archaeological information can thus be understood from two perspectives: the settlement’s built features and its associated burial grounds.

Church and chapel

Gradišče is home to the Church of Sts Primus and Felician, “Cerkev sv. Primoža in Felicijana”, which is listed as architectural heritage. The older of the tower’s two bells bears an inscription dated 1767. The Chapel of Our Lady is also listed as architectural heritage; it was built in 1903. Inside the chapel is a statue of the Virgin Mary in folk art style, locally known as “Ave Marija”. The dates mark different historical milestones: 1767 is the year on the bell’s inscription, while 1903 is the year the chapel was built. The local name for the statue of Mary adds a specific local detail to this architectural history.

For planning your day, it is helpful to distinguish between the different focuses: the Svarunova pot takes about five hours, providing a clear timeframe, while the archaeological and religious sites define Gradišče’s cultural and historical character. Plan according to whether you would rather focus on a longer circular hike or on the village’s history and architectural heritage.
