The E6 long-distance hiking trail passes through Mački, and the distance to the forestry hut near Predgozd can be estimated: the journey is said to take just under four hours. In addition to planning your route, the village’s history offers another focus, with a commemorative plaque, a former custom and several historical objects.

Hiking on the E6

At the edge of the village, the E6 runs along a cart track past holiday homes and then climbs towards the forest. For planning your day, distinguish this from the information about the forestry hut: the estimate of just under four hours applies to the route from Mački to the hut, not to the entire long-distance trail. So allow this time for this specific connection, and plan for breaks and any additional stretches of the route separately. Surfaces and access conditions may change; trail conditions also vary by season. Checking the current route conditions before setting out will help you assess the stage realistically.

Remembrance and customs

The commemorative plaque for members in Mački is considered a protected part of the cultural heritage. This gives remembrance itself a specific place in the village’s history. A former custom offers another glimpse into local traditions: on Kresni večer, at around four in the afternoon, people in Mački carried uprooted bedding material and a few Kresnice flowers across all the fields and sprinkled them with holy water. The custom combined materials carried across the fields with a religious act of blessing.

Historical objects from Mački

An ethnographic entry from 1960 links a spinning wheel (Kolovrat) to the household of Marija Zakrajšek at Mački 2. The person, object and address provide a specific historical association. Another ethnographic record from 1960 links a Križevatno kolo, also called a “krževač,” to Tinček at Mački 6. Its components include a hub, spokes and a circle or rim. In the case of the Križevatno kolo, the record makes its construction tangible as well as noting its personal association: the components listed add a practical description to the name.

An ethnographic entry from 1960 also describes a vehicle for transporting wood in Mački. It consisted of a trunk or tree trunk, had two front axles and a rear steering axle, and was fitted with “piki.” Here, the focus is on the material and construction: the trunk formed the body of the vehicle, while the arrangement of the axles also allowed for steering. The objects have different points of emphasis: the personal associations matter for the spinning wheel and the Križevatno kolo, while the construction is the focus for the wood-transport vehicle. These differences give each historical object its own point of reference in the village’s traditions.
