Škofljica lies on the southeastern edge of the Ljubljansko Barje moorland. Between the moor and the forest, trails offer different time options; Lisičje Castle and the frescoes in the Church of Saint Ursula add cultural history to the nature-focused attractions. When planning a stay, it is helpful to consider both walking times and the kinds of sights you would like to explore.
Choose hiking trails by time available
The Svarunova Trail is 23 km long and takes about five hours at a moderate pace. The Pijavška Moor Trail covers 8 km and takes about two to three hours, also at a moderate pace; the Čemšeniška Castle Trail is 12 km long and takes about three to four hours at a moderate pace. The estimated time requirements therefore differ considerably; conditions can affect walking times. There are also several hiking trails and cycling routes in the area.
The Svarunova Trail features 33 information boards and telephone information about natural, cultural and historical attractions. An organised hiking day is traditionally held on 25 June, Slovenia’s Statehood Day. Check the arrangements for the year of your visit in advance. The Čemšeniška Castle Trail is marked with green and yellow signs and information boards.
Moorland and forest themes
The Pijavška Moor Trail passes typical moorland plants and animals, as well as a drinking-water intake along the route. Some of the boards focus on the area’s historical and cultural heritage. The route thus combines nature with insights into local history and culture.
The Park čutil in Škofljica is a themed leisure and recreation park centred on moorland habitats and the municipality’s natural environment. It includes a habitat for birds and ducks. The Koliščarska steza in the park has walking paths and benches. Those more interested in forests than moorland can explore a different focus on the forest nature trail, which introduces typical tree species and forest life. The trail starts at the memorial to the victims of fascist violence in Drglerija; to reach it by car, drive from Škofljica Primary School towards Zalog.
Lisičje Castle and cultural history
Lisičje Castle is designated a cultural monument of local importance for its cultural, art-historical and architectural, historical and landscape value. It was built in the mid-16th century and acquired its present appearance at the end of the 18th century. Its construction date and present-day appearance therefore reflect two different historical periods. The castle is one of the attractions to visit near Škofljica.
Various cultural events take place at the Lisičje manor house; it is also used for weddings. Before visiting, check current dates and access arrangements. The Gothic Church of Saint Ursula is known for its Late Gothic frescoes, including the oldest fresco depicting the Slovenian landscape.
Getting there and planning
Škofljica is on the Ljubljana–Kočevje road and the Ljubljana–Grosuplje–Metlika railway line. Road conditions, timetables and station arrangements can change, so check the latest information before travelling. You can travel to the Pijavška Moor Trail by bus via Škofljica, then take a connection to Pijava Gorica. Check current connections in advance.
When planning an overnight stay, it helps to first identify the excursions you want to take and their approximate walking times. This will help you decide whether to focus your stay on moorland and forest trails, cultural attractions, or a mix of both.
