Two groups of prehistoric pile dwellings near Ig form the Slovenian part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps.” Ig also offers a range of options for cultural and nature outings: a nature reserve open to the public year-round, themed trails and traces from several historical periods. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you want to focus on pile-dwelling history, the landscape of the Ljubljana Marshes or a particular walking route.
Pile-dwelling history and traces from different historical periods
Hiša Morostig provides information about pile-dwelling settlements and the lives of their inhabitants, alongside a scale reconstruction of the Maharski prekop settlement from the 35th century BC. Another reconstruction, the Kolišče pile-dwelling village in Morostig, consists of five huts. The village is about 2 km from Hiša Morostig—a useful distinction to keep in mind when planning to visit both sites.
Even a single artefact tells a story about the design of this distant past: the “Idol from the Ljubljansko barje” is a stylized human-shaped vessel made of fired clay, with a decorated garment. The cross motif appears fourteen times. The object was discovered in the area of the pile-dwelling settlements near Ig. St. Martin’s Parish Church in Ig reveals a different historical context: the Baroque building dates from the early 18th century. At the baptismal font, part of a Roman gravestone depicting two lions serves as the pedestal.
Archaeological traces extend beyond the pile-dwelling period. Remains of a Bronze Age settlement were found in the valley east of the prehistoric settlement site of Gradišče Pungart near Ig. Further remains from Roman times are also known in the wider area below Gradišče Pungart.
Nature reserve and marshland trails
Iški Morost is a 63.5-hectare nature reserve that is open to the public year-round; admission is free. The reserve has the Koščeva učna pot educational trail, an observation tower and information boards. The themed Pot Morostig trail runs through the Ljubljana Marshes, offering another way to explore the landscape.
For a manageable loop through the forest, try the Gozdna učna pot Draga pri Igu: it is an easy circular route just over 3 km long. Its 27 information boards cover both common and less familiar tree species, as well as unusual features of the forest. The focus is therefore not only on the route itself, but also on the topics explained along the way.
Hikes and routes to compare
The Koščeva učna pot is 2.5 km long including the paved path, and takes about an hour and a half to walk. The Iška–Krim hiking trail offers a different time estimate: it is 5.2 km long and takes 2 hours and 10 minutes on foot. This gives you two specific walking times to weigh up, without comparing the routes by length alone.
The Pot barjanska okna route is suitable for both hiking and cycling. It runs for 1.7 km from Podkraj to the Jevšnik canal by the Iška and follows a gravel path for most of its length. At the viewing platform by Strahomerska okna, ground profiles show the alluvial fan and the marsh; illustrations explain how the marsh windows formed.
The 13 km Okljuk trail is also suitable for walkers and recreational cyclists. It connects the Iški Vintgar gorge with the outlet near the village of Lipe. Those wishing to hike in the surrounding hills have more options there; Krim can be reached via more than six clearly marked mountain trails.
Iški Vintgar and local insights
The Iška River flows through the Iški Vintgar gorge. Gravel banks, numerous pools and steep, rocky banks shape the terrain; a walk through the gorge offers a chance to see different types of rock. A partisan hospital about an hour’s walk from Iški Vintgar was in operation from April 1942 and was restored in 1966.
The market and a local event also add to the picture of the area. In 2024, the Tržnica Ig market sold produce and products from local and other vendors. Koliščarski dan is a traditional event in Draga pri Igu; its 2023 and 2025 editions included archaeological, nature and creative workshops. These two dated examples offer a glimpse into different local themes without suggesting a current event date.
