Rodine can be explored through several traces of history and culture: sacred architecture and pilgrimage, the literary legacy of Janez Jalen, and an archaeological site from Roman times. These themes can help you decide what interests you most about the village: the history of its churches and local area, the museum in Jalen’s birthplace, or a cycling tour focused on cultural heritage.
Church and pilgrimage in Rodine
The Baroque Church of St. Clement, which can be seen today, was built in 1692. It is one of the oldest monuments of sacred architecture in this part of Gorenjska. The history of the church grounds goes back further: a religious building already stood there in the second half of the 10th century. Rodine thus brings together different periods of religious architectural history, from the earlier building on the site to the 17th-century Baroque church.
A recurring occasion is the pilgrimage gathering for St. Anne. It takes place in Rodine every year on 26 July and has been held there since the 15th century. Its fixed date and long tradition give this event a distinct place alongside the architectural history of St. Clement’s.
Janez Jalen: birthplace, museum and local experiences
Janez Jalen’s birthplace is one of the oldest buildings in the village of Rodine. It was declared a cultural monument in 1987 and renovated in 1992 to house the museum. The museum features an exhibition of most of Jalen’s literary estate. The building’s history and the writer’s literary work are thus both in focus at the same place.
The museum also regularly offers demonstrations as a living museum: bread is baked in the kitchen’s open hearth. Every year, the museum also hosts the Honey Thread tasting event, where visitors can sample various honeys from local beekeepers. These demonstrations and the annual tasting complement the literary focus with hands-on insights into breadmaking and local beekeeping.
Roman archaeology at Ključe
Another layer of history is represented by the Villa rustica at Ključe in the village of Rodine. The archaeological site is a characteristic testament to the 2nd-century Roman period. A villa rustica was a rural Roman estate; the villa at Ključe was surrounded by walls. Its ground plan can still be made out in the terrain. The site offers a different way to explore Rodine’s past from its church, pilgrimage and literary heritage: here, the focus is on a Roman complex.
Cycling tour and practical information
Rodine is also part of a pleasant cycling tour across the flatlands, which starts and ends in Žirovnica and passes through Moste, Breg, Vrba, Velike njive, Begunje na Gorenjskem, Poljče, Rodine, Smokuč, Doslovče, Breznica, Zabreznica and Selo pri Žirovnici. The tour focuses on cultural heritage and connects several places; Rodine is one section of the route described. Check the route again before setting off.
For practical information when arriving, note that larger parking areas for buses and cars are available in Rodine. Cultural attractions, the cycling tour and practical arrival information thus complement one another, without requiring the individual sights to be linked into a set route.
