Planina pod Golico combines daffodil meadows and hiking with a glimpse into the mining history of Savske jame. Ĺ panov vrh also serves as a starting point for hikes and winter activities, whose operation and conditions are subject to the season.

Daffodil Meadows and Hikes to Golica

Planina pod Golico is a starting point for visiting the daffodil meadows. The circular route from Planina pod Golico to the summit of Golica is especially beautiful in May, when fragrant alpine daffodils blanket the slopes in white. The daffodil meadows stretch between Plavški Rovt, Prihodi, Planina pod Golico and Javorniški Rovt. Traditional land-management practices and regular late mowing in June help preserve them. This means that, alongside the experience of seeing the flowers, visitors can also learn about the measures used to maintain the meadows.

During the daffodil season, the TIC Planina pod Golico opens in the local community premises. There, you can get information about local attractions and hiking maps. This service is available seasonally during the flowering period and may be helpful for finding your way around during this time of year.

A Hiking Route with Mining History

The Old Mining Route offers a different focus. It runs from Stara Sava via Murova, Pejce, Prihodi and Planina pod Golico to Savske jame. The moderately difficult route has an elevation gain of 600 m and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. You can factor this time into your daily itinerary.

The Savske jame iron ore deposit is one of the oldest in Slovenia. The entrance to Korlnov rov has been preserved in the mining area; information boards there point out other mines and mining facilities. While the Golica loop is primarily associated with the daffodil bloom in May, the Old Mining Route leads to an area where mining is the central theme. The two routes therefore offer different points of interest.

Winter Options and Conditions

A chairlift runs from Planina pod Golico to Španov vrh. It has been in operation since 1964, with only brief interruptions; current operation depends on the season and conditions. Španov vrh is a year-round starting point for many hikes and is also used by ski tourers and alpine skiers in winter. The summit’s role as a hiking starting point and the seasonally operated chairlift should be treated as separate points of reference.

The Sava Caves natural toboggan run is located in Planina pod Golico, in the Sava Caves area. When there is enough snow, it is 700 m long and suitable for family sledding. Night sledding is available for closed groups of up to 40 people by prior arrangement. When planning a winter visit, take snow conditions and the season- and condition-dependent availability of the chairlift into account; night sledding requires a prior arrangement. Check the specific conditions before travelling.

Plan Your Stay Around the Time of Year

When looking for a holiday apartment, your planned activities are a good starting point: the route to Golica is especially appealing in May, while the toboggan run requires sufficient snow and the chairlift operates depending on the season and conditions. At about three and a half hours, the Old Mining Route offers another hiking option focused on cultural history.
