The Martuljek stream flows over steep slopes and rock faces, forming waterfalls, cascades and rapids. The Martuljek Waterfalls lie above the valley of Gozd Martuljek: the upper waterfall plunges in three stages over a 110-metre-high rock face. The lower one drops over a 50-metre-high face into a narrow, 400-metre-long limestone gorge.

Waterfalls and Trails in a Natural Setting

The area of the Martuljek Waterfalls has been part of Triglav National Park since 1981. The Martuljek range also has several marked forest trails for hikers. As well as the waterfalls, the landscape is defined by paths through the forest and along the stream.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The Rute Forest Educational Trail is a circular route about one kilometre long. In normal trail conditions, it is suitable for all generations. It follows the Martuljek stream towards the first Martuljek Waterfall and offers information about the forest as well as old stories of Ledenec and Srebrnokrilec. The trail combines a short walk with nature and storytelling.

The Rutarška Trail runs along the Sava Dolinka between Gozd Martuljek and Kranjska Gora. It is 1.5 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 20 minutes; stops and exercises can affect the duration. The trail runs from the Keklov Bridge to the Srenški Bridge. Its facilities include exercise stations, a book box, viewing aids for the Martuljek Group and several benches. As installed facilities may change, check their condition before your visit.

Another starting point for exploring the area is the Path over Stone: it begins in the upper part of Gozd Martuljek near the Kekelj Bridge. There is a visitor centre there; check whether it is open before your trip. The Karavanke Hiking Trail continues through Gozd Martuljek to the lower slopes of the Karawanks. The Martuljek Group can be seen from a viewpoint.

The trail measurements provide practical guidance for planning: the Rute Forest Educational Trail is a circular route about one kilometre long, while the Rutarška Trail is described as 1.5 kilometres long with a walking time of 20 minutes. Exercises and stops can affect the walking time on the Rutarška Trail.

Via Ferratas and Seasonal Planning

The Via Ferrata Hvadnik is a climbing route through a wild gorge in Gozd Martuljek. It is half a kilometre long and reaches an elevation of 250 metres above sea level. The secured Via Ferrata Jerm’n has a consistent difficulty rating of around D, and even E in some sections. Both via ferratas have the stated seasonal closure period: they are closed from 31 October to 1 April. Take these dates into account when planning your visit.

Cycling through Gozd Martuljek

Several cycling routes also pass through the village. The 34-kilometre Mojstrana–Korensko sedlo stage of the Trans-Karavanke Cycling Trail runs through Gozd Martuljek. The Kranjska Gora 03 cycling route crosses the Sava Dolinka here via a bicycle bridge. Another described route runs from Kranjska Gora through Gozd Martuljek and Srednji Vrh to Mojstrana, then returns via Gozd Martuljek to Kranjska Gora. The 34-kilometre stage and this cycling route thus offer different distance details to help you choose.

Traces of Local History

“Rute” is an earlier name for Gozd Martuljek, which locals still use as a reminder of the past. Information boards about the Heritage of Rute near the Kekljev Bridge explain how the village developed and what customs and traditions existed there. Their content aims to preserve local heritage and memories and share them with locals and visitors alike. Alongside the nature trails, this offers a glimpse into the history and inherited heritage of the village to help inform your travel plans.

Whether you plan around waterfalls, a short circular walk, a riverside trail, via ferratas or a cycling trip, the trail lengths, stated walking time and seasonal closure period help you distinguish between the different activities and conditions.
