Žalec offers several ways to explore culture and local themes. The defensive tower preserves the only surviving part of the former fortified enclosure; Savinova hiša connects the name Risto Savin with several cultural institutions housed there. Church art, historic architectural styles, firefighting history and hop culture complete the picture. You can choose whether to focus your stay on architecture, biography, collections or a themed walk.

Architectural History and Church Art

The defensive tower of Žalec was built at the beginning of the 16th century and is the only surviving part of the former fortified enclosure. At St. Nicholas Church, the portal in the bell tower dates from 1670. The heritage features also include gravestones and Bergant’s well-known oil painting of St. Nicholas. Zotlova kovačija adds to the picture of the architectural heritage: the building also dates from the 16th century and preserves historic architectural elements. While the defensive tower and Zotlova kovačija date back to the 16th century, the portal has a precise date from the 17th century.

Remembrance, Art and Collections

Savinova hiša is the birthplace of General and composer Risto Savin. The house contains his memorial room, the gallery of visual artists from the Savinja region and the Jelica Žuža Salon. One house thus offers a perspective extending from Savin’s biography to regional visual art and the salon. The Žalec Firefighting Museum focuses on a different subject: it preserves more than 600 objects and materials related to firefighting. Here, the focus is on a thematic collection, not the life story of a single person.

Routes and Hop Culture

Two routes offer different points of orientation. The Savinova walking trail begins at Savinova hiša and leads to twelve stops in Žalec. Od hmelja do piva is a 5.5-kilometre circular route that can begin at the Green Gold Beer Fountain. The first route is defined by its sequence of stops, the second by its circular layout and length. When choosing between the routes, you can compare a route with twelve stops with a circular route of a specified distance.

The Green Gold Beer Fountain celebrates the hop-growing heritage of the Lower Savinja Valley and Žalec. Since the circular route can begin there, you can explore this theme right from a possible starting point. Visitors can purchase a glass and sample six 1-decilitre beer servings. The tasting format may vary seasonally; if you plan to make the samples a fixed part of your visit, check the current arrangements in advance.

The garden of medicinal and aromatic plants at the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing offers a different plant-related theme. It provides insights into the cultivation and use of the plants. Visits are possible by prior arrangement.
