Polzela can be explored through a range of cultural and landscape themes. Komenda Castle stands on a hill in the town centre; Šenek Park and Manor are located at a viewpoint on the northern edge. Other highlights include a church with medieval connections, evidence of historic milling technology and agricultural collections. If you are looking for a hotel in Polzela, these different points of interest can help you plan your stay.

Komenda Castle and the history of the Order of Malta

Komenda Castle is an important cultural and historical monument. The Order of Malta owned the castle from the 13th to the 18th century. Today, Komenda Castle houses a collection of exhibits belonging to the Sovereign Order of Malta. Its long history of ownership and the collection offer different ways to explore the site’s historical significance.

The fully renovated Komenda Castle has rooms for tourism, cultural and social activities. The entire site is also an official wedding venue. If you are planning a wedding there, confirm the specific arrangements before booking.

Šenek Park: a cultural monument and walking trails

Šenek Park is designated as a cultural monument. Its distinctive landscape includes more than thirty tree species that are unusual in the local area. This gives the park a botanical character in addition to its protected status. The Turistično društvo Občine Polzela has established an educational trail in the park, where walks are possible in every season.

In 2022, 500 metres of illuminated walking paths were installed in the park; there is also a children’s playground. Paths and facilities may change. If these amenities are important to your plans, it is worth checking their current condition shortly before your visit.

The Church of Sv. Marjete and historical evidence

The Church of Sv. Marjete stands in the present-day centre of Polzela and is first mentioned in 1255. In 1263, it became a commandery church; a relief of the Maltese cross in the presbytery points to this status. Together with the history of Komenda Castle, it offers another perspective on the role of the Order of Malta in Polzela’s history, although the two sites provide different kinds of historical evidence.

A black locust tree stands in front of the church. In a measurement taken on 20 October 2022, it was recorded as the thickest black locust in Slovenia. This ranking refers to the measurement at that time and may change. The tree adds a striking natural feature to the church’s historical significance.

Mills, farm tools and tractors

Mešičev mlin was one of the best-known mills in the municipality of Polzela. The operation included a mill and a sawmill; a generator for domestic lighting was added later. The historic mill buildings have been restored. The sequence of mill, sawmill and generator offers insight into the technological development of the operation, while the restored buildings themselves mark another chapter in the local heritage.

Cajhnov kozolec and the Muzej starih traktorjev are also located in the municipality. Cajhnov kozolec presents a small ethnological collection of old farm tools and equipment. The tractor museum displays more than twenty restored vintage tractors. The two collections focus on different things: agricultural tools and equipment in one, historic tractors in the other. As visiting arrangements may change, it is best to check them in advance if you are planning a visit.

Routes and practical planning

Pot ob Savinji is a gravel path that runs continuously along the Savinja from Šempeter. Cyclists from Polzela use it, as do runners, hikers and walkers. The differences described here may help you compare it with the walking trails in Šenek Park: the educational trail is in the park, while Pot ob Savinji is a gravel path along the river used by several groups.

For public bike hire, there is a KolesCE system station behind the municipal building, at the Polzela sports hall. It has two electric bikes and one conventional bicycle. Users must register for free before their first rental.

When choosing the focus of your stay, you can weigh up architectural and religious history, park walks, technological heritage and agricultural collections. For visits where arrangements or availability may change, it is sensible to check the current options in advance.
