Tabor lies where the lowlands meet the rolling hills and, beneath the slopes of the surrounding hills, is a starting point for hiking and cycling trips. The municipality also offers walks through pine forests in Ojstriška vas. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: the history around Sv. Jurij, natural features at Krvavica, local cultural activities or products from the area. First decide which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.
Local History and Culture
Tabor was first mentioned in historical records in 1436. Part of the defensive wall built around the church of Sv. Jurij toward the end of the 15th century to protect against the Turks has been preserved. The first mention and the later fragment of the fortification offer two distinct historical points of reference for the town. The surviving wall also makes its former protective function tangible in a specific structure.
The Tabor Cultural, Historical and Tourism Association maintains a small museum about the history of the Counts of Žovnek and the Counts of Celje, the Second Peasant Revolt in Slovenia, and Count Schrattenbach. Its themes thus range from the noble families to a peasant revolt. If the museum is a cultural priority for you, check locally what visiting options are available.
The association’s section dedicated to preserving cultural traditions makes Ojstriški zajčki and Ojstriške Veronika dolls. It also runs numerous creative workshops. If you are interested in these activities, ask about visiting options and the current workshop program.
In the center of Ojstriška vas, Kmetija Pepel houses a museum collection about beekeeping. It displays tools once used by beekeepers. Alongside the dolls mentioned above, this brings the area’s former beekeeping practices into focus as another aspect of local culture.
Nature and Trails in the Municipality
Within the municipality of Tabor, Krvavica is designated as a geomorphological, underground and botanical natural monument. Beneath the summit, a karst cave opens up, measuring 21 meters deep and 30 meters long. A natural window is 4 meters wide and 2 meters high. The window and cave are different natural features: the window is described by its width and height, and the cave by its depth and length.
A stand of yew trees on the western slope of Krvavica, within the municipality, is designated as a natural attraction. The Tabor Mountaineering Association maintains trails up Krvavica. Check current trail conditions before setting out; trail maintenance is no substitute for checking their condition yourself.
Hiking and cycling trips beneath the surrounding hills and walks through the pine forests in Ojstriška vas offer two different ways to explore the landscape. One involves hiking or cycling, the other a walk in the forest. You can tailor your day to the activity you prefer without combining the two into a single route.
Planning Hikes and Local Products
From the Tabor pri Vranskem bus stop, it takes 2 hours and 15 minutes to reach Zajčeva koča. Allow this amount of time for this particular approach and check route information and public transport connections before you travel, as both may change.
Zajčeva koča is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from May to October. Its dining room has 28 seats, and sleeping accommodation is available for 19 people. Check opening hours and current facilities before your visit.
At Kmetija Laznik, the “Stara štala” has a room for tasting its air-dried meat products. This is a specific culinary point of interest alongside the local history and nature themes. When planning your trip, you can also make a local product a focus in its own right.
